Spalted Maple Veena Build

I had no idea when I started how much I was going to like this. 1-piece Alder Back w/Spalted Maple Cap. I seperatied the two woods visually by doing a black binding that I trimmed down to just over 1mm. I had discussed originally using a veneer between them, but I was concerned that the black dye would bleed, so we decided this was the best way to go. I like the way the lines in the cap run into the binding.

Here's the neck blank:

And this is where I am as of yesterday:

Gold Gibson Bridge and Tailpiece, Gold Schaller M6 Mini's, and 2 Humbuckers are on the menu now. Natural finish because I don't want to lose any of the contrast in the body. Tung oil on the neck will darken it some and bring out the figuring.

That is one of the nicest pieces of Spalted Maple I have ever seen perfect for book matched top. It appears there are no gaps or openings you have to fill.

Yes you're correct, it is very smooth and there is no filling to do. I have some Burle Maple for the next one that won't be as forgiving. I'm still researching the best way to finish it.

Rear mounted pickups really add to it and leave more of the top to look at. It's going to get gold hardware... this is just for show.
