Guys,

a friend of mine is making me a Les Paul type P90 guitar.
Don't know much about P90's though....

I like the sound of the Seymour Duncan 59 (A5)

What would you suggest for a bridge & neck P90 pickup?

That depends on what you want to hear...

P90's have their own sound, different from single coils and humbuckers. IMHO they're kind of like a single coil all hyped up on the dope... errrr, uhhhh... I mean, bolder, badder...

If you want humbucker sound that will fit in a P90 space, that would be a different thing. I would grab up a couple '56 Gold Top clones at the local mart to get a rough idea of what a P90 gives you over (or under) a humbucker or single coils. If it's built like a Les Paul, it's still gonna sound like a Les Paul with a P90 or a humbucker. (my 2 cents)

I had a Godin LG P-90, which came with Duncan SP90's (which I believe were Duncan SP90-3's) and they kicked some serious ass. Some of the most ballsy pickups I've ever heard.

Lindy Fralin, you should check out his work as well. I have been lucky enough to have had '54 P-90's in my two '54 Juniors, and currently my 1952 Goldtop with two of the best P-90's would ever want to hear..
I will say that single coils are my first love Strats, then Gibson P-90's, then maybe humbuckers..
Bare Knuckles are pricey but they are tone to the bone as well

Duncan Antiquties sound great.

If you're already into Duncan's, the P90 Stacks are an option. (I have zero tolerance for 60Hz.)

I wish Bill Lawrence or Rockfield made a "quiet" normal size P90. Their stuff sounds good without the ridiculous price tag.



NOTE: S.D. P90 Stacks require a deeper than standard pickup route.

I had Lollars in my Thorn, and they sounded great. Of course the Thorn helped too. Some feel that they are a bit polite for P90's but I liked em mucho!

Another winder that gets high praise for his P90's is J S Moore, and he is pretty good value IMHO. If I needed a set now I would use him.

+1. Try some different magnets if the stock "aged" magnets aren't hot enough.

Look at the magnets in my 1952 P90's these are huge ass things they slammed in there..LOL

+1 on the Fralin's. Lindy Fralin is a great pickup winder and you will never go wrong with any of his pickups. I have one of his strat sets and p-90 set in my guitars and both are great.

I had Wolfetone mean and meaner p-90's in my r4. I got some great fat lead tones in the studio and on stage, but they were a little too dark for this particular guitar. I just swapped them for some low output '50's style Lollars that are modeled after the pickups that would have been stock in a '54 les paul. This was the final thing I needed to do to this guitar, the range of tone is awesome with the Lollars. This is probably the best experience I've had with replacing pickups. The Wolfetone's were great, but not the right pickups for this guitar. I think they will really shine when I find the right sg special to put them in. Phil
