hey all
What would you guys recomend for a nice set of resonably priced pickups for an ASH body/MAPLE neck 70s strat?
I've got a DiMarzio FS-1 in the bridge of my other strat which is the same thing(ASH/MAPLE)and I love it but I want something more vintage for the new strat I'm building.
I had a set of Fender 69' CS pickups in an ALDER/MAPLE strat and I liked them allot, but at times thought they coulda been a hair less scopped. BUT....would they be less scooped in an ASH body guitar though??
I've been looking at the GFS strat pups anyone have a set of those?? Which set??
Thanks
Strat pickup set advise please

Re: Strat pickup set advise please
I went through a bunch of Strat pickups sets in mine. Bill Lawrence, DiMarzio, SD, Fender Texas Specials, Fender Custom Shop models. I just didn't get the balls I needed out of the tone.
Finally got some WCR SR pickups, and they worked out for me. Having 5 usable positions is great. I also needed to do a custom wiring setup, so I have two volumes, and one master tone. One volume runs the bridge, the first one does all the rest. That allows you to run two volumes in the #4 position (between the middle and bridge pickups) so you can set the middle for around 5-6, and the bridge pickup on 10. Gives you a nice crunchy chord tone, then flick the toggle to the bridge for a screaming lead tone.
I finally like my Strat now...only too 7 years to get it dialed in. Good luck with yours. The SR set ain't cheap. $450 with pots/caps/wiring and pickups, and it's not as hot as a P90, but it's hotter than standard Strat pickups. Works out perfect for me...finally!

Re: Strat pickup set advise please
Yea my anniversary strat has the stock wiring but a similar idea the same. The middle pickup is dead but still works, sounds really tinny. But in the mid/bridge position it adds just a little treble snap to the bridge pickups tone, that I've allways loved. That and its like having a clean channel on the #3 position.lol
Thats the one w/ FS-1 in the bridge, has another vintage style DiMarzio in the neck I forgot the model.

Re: Strat pickup set advise please
i tried the CS 69' in my mark knopfler strat with lightweight ash body and it doesn't give much mids.
i put back the texas specil neck and middle in neck and bridge and kept the cs 69 in the middle, waiting to buy a good set of pu's for that strat that's naturaly bright with a good bell like tone but it can be too trebly with some amps (marshall)

Re: Strat pickup set advise please
i looked on WCR website but didn't see any single coil strat pu's !
i like his humbuckers but after i tried some 68 and 69 T-Tops Pu's , i think they are a bit more modern sounding than the T-tops; with more high mids that cut through and quiet bright (but not harsh) at least for teh crossroads with A2 (it sounds more modern with more low mids and low end with A5).
they are good modern repros and this extra cut can be interesting in live or recordings but i might prefer some more vintage sounding ones for my strats , with maybe a softer / looser attack to begin with as strats are already bright guitars usualy .
