(sigh)This a question that I hate to pop, but I've had it with my Epiphone, i'm even considering putting off a new head & cab, and the prices are F**KING ridiculous. So, what's better, real vintage(I could fork over the money if worth it) of VOS(also ridiculous)?

Well, my opinion on this subject doesn't seem to fall into the majority, but I'll voice it anyway.........

Most people will say you can't live without a Historic. But seriously, just go to GC or wherever and try a bunch of Les Pauls -- be it used, Standards or Historics. And get the one that jumps out at you, no matter what price tier it may be from. There's killer Standards/Studios/Classics out there, and crappy vintage and Historic examples too. So skip our hype and let your hands and ears tell you which is the one guitar for you.

To add to what Flames1950 said, play the guitars unamplified first. If it sounds good acoustically, that tone will translate amplified.

Actually, although I didn't mention it, I never plug in at the store. All I care about is the wood and how it sounds and feels in my hands. I change electronics like socks so they're not a consideration!!

Flames is correct, the natural acoustic sound of the guitar is the key and most vital element to the equation.

These were the only LP's that interested me in the last year or so, I'm not sure if Larry is still doing them though

I really like my Edwards made in Japan LP/JP guitar. I also like the the frets to cover the side binding I find the nibs that Gibson uses silly and the longer frets are more forgiving.

Was in the same boat, played more new Gibsons than I can remember over the past year or two looking, trying to find just ONE that sounded like a LP should. I've only had an old Epi LP for years now (but some good Gibbys in the past), just couldn't find anything new (or used) that really sounded like a LP should that I could afford. Can't stand the featherweight chambered Standards, etc of today, nor care for the new circuit board PCB pot setup they now have.

Finally looked into the LP Traditional guitars out now, and was pleasantly surprised. Never plugged it in at store but when I first picked it up my hopes went up immediately as it was at least 10lbs. By the first few strums I knew I finally found what I was looking for. Still did need to try a few different Traditionals to find the "one", but am very happy with my guitar again for the first time in about 10 years. So I'd recommend trying out/looking into some LP Traditionals if a Gibson is preferred without the (quite as) ridiculous price tag.

Very nice. I'm a big fan of the Traditional series as well. No frills, solid playing guitars. They seem to be the best bang for the buck of Gibson's current offerings.

If you're into the specs of a vintage Paula, check out the G0-Series made for 'guitar center'. These are made by the Custom Shop too but they are cheaper than any other Historic. You'll get a one piece neck and body from the same wood the Historics are made of, long tenon, a plaintop and a 60's neck.

Exactly what I just bought and I love it. Basically the same as an R0 with a plaintop. Some don't have CTS pots and bumblebee caps but mine came with 'em (2007 model).

These are nice guitars. I was looking for an affordable Paul with vintage specs, checked out all the infos available and finally found this 2008 model for a good price from a collector who never played it.
I wanted a long tenon. I just couldn't get over that - you might have seen it before: above the short tenon - well to me a as carpenter this is not even a tenon but plain BS. Below the long tenon of the Historics...


This guitar is built very well, very accurate. But there still are a few things about it: the pleked frets are pretty low from the start, the neck profile doesn't get thicker the more you get to the neck joint like on old Gibsons - so it feels a little whimpy up there, and there's these issues with the finish which starts getting a little greasy at the back of the neck when you play.
Upgrading the PU's, the tuners and the saddle wouldn't be a mistake either...
But still a good guitar - although not my favourite one.
