epi V

Post by Doug H » Sat Feb 21, 2009 1:55 am

They've got an Epi flying V at one of my local music stores. It's kind of caught my eye. ONe of the wood finished ones. Don't know if it's Korina or not, but it looks like the pictures I've seen of the "Korina 58" Epi. I've read some disturbing thing about them for the price they are asking, not alot, but enough to scare me.

I'm a strat player, single coil, but something about the early Vs captures my interest. If I have to replace all the hardware tho it hardly seems like it;s worth it buying one of these new. I'm gonna give it a play and see how it goes. If it's been sitting around the shop maybe I can low ball them :)

The pickups in my Epi V were utter crap -- they squealed like a little piggy so I replaced them and the pots right off. Otherwise I don't have any problem with Epi V's.

Some had a veneer on them instead of being solid korina. Mine's veneered but I didn't really care.

V's are bolt on right? The other option is to just spend a grand and build one

played a couple V's in the local music store today. A EPI 58 and a new Gibson 67. The Gibson played nicer than the EPI but seemed more a hard rock / metal guitar to me, I liked the big neck and controls on the 58, as well as the fatter tone. It was kind of dull in the highs.

I think I'm going to try and find a used EPI.

I know....I never have the dough for these when they come up, and they really call to me. :( :(

That's why I went for the Epi in the first place -- I like the vintage V styling, not the '67 style that most Gibsons are. Certainly can't afford the Gibson Historic versions.

mmmmm, das nice but too rich for me. My Epi does the job when I get a hankerin' for a V.

The old Ibanez V's aren't very damn easy to find, but I'd bet they're killer. Did Hamer make true vintage style V's? I had a Hamer V in the eighties that was basically a vintage V in construction, but flame maple top and no pickguard....plus the Kahler wasn't '58-approved.

from a site I found
Ibanez Rocket Roll Sr., also known as a 1958 Flying V copy. Some refer to this as a lawsuit guitar
