I'm thinking about building my own guitar combining some of the features of my favorite guitar players.

I was going to do something like a Strat shape, 70's headstock, 24 frets, 7 string, with floyd rose to mimic some of the stuff Uli Roth did with both his strat and his sky guitar...and then combine that with Burns Tri Sonic pickups wired in series like Brian May.

However, one thing that I don't know about is 7 string guitars and pickups. Would a 6 string pickup like the burns tri-sonic not work correctly with a 7 string guitar? Obviously the poles would be out of line, but I'm curious as to how much of a difference this would make.

Also, I'm curious as to how to best route a body for the 2 way switches. Does anyone have any experience with this?

I'm probably going to sell my Joe Perry Les Paul if I go about doing this (the black burst one, with treble booster tap on the tone pot) so if anyone is interested in the guitar let me know as well. Its a great sounding piece of equipment but I already have too many guitars and don't really need to add another one without getting rid of this one.

Its probably not gonna have equal output string to string with 6 pole pickups and 7 strings. I would probably opt for some sort of "blade" type pickup, if there's one that you like the tone of, but there are enough pickup builders out there that make 7 string pickups, so it shouldnt be that much of an issue

Thanks, its sort of what I figured.

As for too many guitars. I used to feel the same way but I think I already have 10 or 11 and a few of them are more like collectors items to me than players. I want to keep it down to 2 or 3 players and then a couple that I can play for certain tones when I record. Then again I do sort of like the joe perry and I may just keep it anyways ;o)
