Anyone ever tried mustard caps for say, your les paul tone caps? Just curious what the results were if so.

I use those silver paper/oil caps from Russia the .015 value cheaper than mustards and even smoother. That value doesn't cut as much mids gives me a more usable range on the tone control.

Cool. Thanks Alex. I have some mustards lying around and thought, Hmmm... Anyway, I'm using Dr.vintage pots and caps, which are really great, but I'm looking for a little more honk on the bridge when turning the tone down. I get a nice subtle change all the way to about two, then right when it's about to sound just right, mud. Really clear and nice on two, mud on one. Thought I would putz with the cap first. Any other suggestions?

I run a bright cap bypass on my volume control. So the tone actually gets a bit brighter a clearer as I turn down the volume if I then turn down the tone control it cuts the added highs and gives me a real strong mid sound. You just have to experiment.

I got those silver Russian caps from someone on this board relatively cheap like $5 each I think. Not the over the top prices I have seen for vintage caps or clones which aren't really any different. But I think the .015 value with humbuckers gives me a wider range of control and no mud.

908ssp, what kind of wiring are you using? 50s or modern?

I just put some RS super pots in my LP. I was really pleased when broke the lead off one of the bumblebee tone caps. D'oh!

So I scrounged around and found a mustard .033uf That sounds pretty good for the tone cap on the neck PU.

SO you guys really see a difference with different types of caps in your axe?? HUmm I was thinking maybe just a regular cap would do the trick since there is no current in the guitar like for an amp!!! Hummm !!!

We should start a testing cap in guitar thread and see the results!!!

I've found that only certain caps roll off the tone right for the woman tone. Many caps are just plain un-usable.

Really hey? Which one are un-usable so I don't waste my time lolll!!! If you can remember a few!!!

NOS black beautys

NOS Bumble bee caps

mustards seem to work fairly well

Jensen paper in oil caps

Sozo caps.

I'm sure there are more, I haven't tried them all.

Ha thx VG!! I've just found one .022 Russian oil one (green one) for the bridge pup, it honks kinda now... I don't dislike it...

What values should we play with here? .047 i've read!! What else??

I like a .015 for a neck pickup sometimes.

but I'm using the paper in oil russian .022s in my les paul now.
Not that i play it much.

Thorn's have RS caps, except for the P90 guitars, have thorn's PIO cap.

I have liked Sozos in guitars but after trying some PIOs in my 335 I think I'm going start using these now.

Fortunately they sound fantastic in the 335 which is just as well, because installing them (and the RS pots) is not an experience I want to repeat in a hurry.

I have tried the Hovland Music caps on my guitar and they produced tones I didnt know I had in the guitar, very awesome. You can get them at RS Guitar works

sincerly, i'm always ready to try things to improve the tone or get closer to teh original ones but i have never really thought caps wold make a difference in a guitar (at least when teh tone pot is about 8 to 10).
i have a CS60 strat that was quiet bright, so i put a mustard 0.1 cap and it didn't change anything !
i tried once a real bumble bee that was 0,026 uf, in my 97' les paul 59' ri , it was too dark, that's all ! LOL
caps make much difference in an amp, not much in a guitar i think (except maybe for teh woman tone ).
60's strats have ceramic disks that are really bright caps but those guitrs still sound very good
