Got a Flying V with BB3 in the bridge and like it very much except for a "softness" on the low strings. Has a great midrange growl and bite on the D string and up but for riffing can be a little soft on the E and A string. What out there that isn't crazy priced (>$150) might give me the growl and bite but have it across all strings?

Playing through a Metro '69 Superlead repro and I'm mainly playing hard classic rock ala Thin Lizzy/AC-DC/NWOBHM etc. I've used 57 classics in the past which I also dig and may go back to but the BB3 has a meanness in the midrange that I like better.

I'm a big fan of all things WCR,
but there are also some great Seymour Duncan pickups for not a lot of bucks.

I'd say Godwood or Darkburst for WCR and
Custom or JB for Duncan.

There was a great pickup shootout done on rig-talk where I didn't like the WCR's as much as others. I've played JB's for many years and it has too much output and not enough clarity for the classic/hard rock sound I'm going for. The Custom is a ceramic and I've never played a ceramic pickup that I liked. In that pickup shootout I thought the Pearly Gates didn't sound too bad, just a little "stiff".

Really on that shoot out, i didn't really like how anything came across. Maybe it's my computer....but I couldn't tell much difference. Real world application is much better.

So, less output than a JB, and non ceramic. Man, hard to beat the venerable Duncan 59. Never been a big Pearly fan myself...I prefer that. Esp. in an all mahogany guitar.

After listening some more to that shootout I actually dig the darkburst from WCR, but the Wolfetones sound really good to me and he's here in Seattle too which is a plus.

Wolfe does very good stuff. I had a Marshallhead I liked quite a bit.

Ever tried the SD screaming demon?

Moderate output, Alnico V magnet, not as 'thin' and honky as a JB.

I run one in my main guitar with a SD Jazz (also Alnico V) in the neck.

Yeah, Tried it in a LP Custom I once had. Found the Screamin' Demon to be too stiff or "sterile" for me.

Sounds like you need to spend some $$$

If you find what your after for reasonable $ let us know as it sounds like the ideal humbucker
