Im gonna build my own les paul, kinda

Post by jbzoso2002 » Fri Jun 19, 2009 9:06 pm

Im sick of seeing everyone else's killer flame top
les pauls. I gota have one!

Im going to build the body and my local
luthier will do the neck, cause i just cant.
He will also do the finishing.

I will be useing the very best wood I can find.
It will be built to 59' specs. I get to pick the
flame top before its built!

Ill do all the electronics. If all goes well it will
be a life long keeper.

It will take a year or so but ill update with pics.

Jimmy

Well, probably the worst guitar to build if you have got no experience in doing it... Les pauls are harder than fenders to say one, top carving, joining maple top to mahogany, the neck is not bolted but glued  Moreover, how can you do the binding?

I think that tools, materials and your liuther's work will bring the price up :|

Why don't you search for a good used R9? There was a killer one on ebay posted from a member with all the upgrades.

I have not found someone that wanted to buy mine so i did not jump on it :(

Ill have less than 2k in it. The guitar will have honduran
mahogary body and neck & a brazilian rosewood fretboard.

Ill get each phase done when i can afford it.
Also I pick the neck profile, and the flame top.

My luthier will do the neck for $350 labor.

dude.........
I've been gone from her a while building my first guitar (59 les paul replica) I am to the point
of waiting for the temp and humidity to go down so I can spray the finish. You can do the neck!! That is
easier than doing the "accurate" top carve! I did my neck in a day and turned out 95% for my first one. I am
confident that I can get my next one 100%.

I too used honduran mahogany body , quartersawn honduran mahogany for the neck
flame maple top, Holly for the headstock, and old growth pre ban brazillian rosewood for the fret board.
The only thing I didnt pop for is the $170 cellulouse inlays from "otp". and all hyde glue construction.

I strung it up before prepping for paint to make sure to get the bridge located correctly for intonation and
man it sounds good!

I'll post a link to my build when I get done in the next couple of weeks.

This is no hijack, it's the same subject. I'm sure it's just what, my buddy, Jimmy needed, a little encouragement.

Actually, I'm the one hijacking here, talking about a totally different subject, like hijacking threads!

You might want to talk to him, I know he has some choice pieces of flame maple lying around his shop, if he's willing to let it go is another story.

He does have some choice fretboards laying around.
I will give no more details about those online untill I get mine.

I found a great online wood suplier with some awsome looking
flame maple.

So, what kind of flame will you go for? Do you like the tight straight tiger stripe or more of a lopeing flame? Is the picture above a contender?
