I recently picked up this LP. It weighs 10lbs 2oz. What's the avg for late/early model LPs.

Hey, Boog, and welcome to the forum!!

LP's vary a LOT in weight. Mine weighs around 8 lbs, which is considered pretty lightweight. I've seen 'em REAL heavy, though, like certain '70's LP Customs. You could anchor a boat with some of them!!
Years ago, I bought what appeared to be a regular old LP Std that was SO light, it seemed abnormal. The body turned out to be fully hollow except for a block under the bridge, and according to George Gruhn, was one of only 125 made, sent to a distributor in Japan. Somehow, this one made it back to these shores. It was around 7 lbs!!
Anyway, I would think the average weight is around 9 lbs, maybe??

My 2007 R7 weighs in at 9lbs 12oz which I think is about average. Most modern LP's seem to weigh in the mid high 9lbs from what I've seen other people post on other forums.

My 2005 R9 is the only one I know the weight of - 8.3lbs. That's on the light end of the scale.

My R9 weighs 8.9 lbs, I have a R0 thats about 8.4, these would be considered light for a solid body Les Paul.

I'm more of a Fender guy but I believe certain models of LP's are chambered to reduce weight
One way is to have round holes drilled in the body ala Swiss Cheese.
The other is to have huge areas scooped out in a more traditional chambering.

I believe this type of chambering was done pre 2008 LPs.

I believe this is how they are doing them now (chambering) I copied it for a build I'm doing for my daughter. I was concerned
about the weight. The control cavity route is a little tight in there but that's cause it's scaled down to 84%.




my 59 replica I built using old growth mahogany ended up weighing in at 8 pounds on the dot.

(I dont tell EVERYONE this, but I DO look cute in a dress, IF you can find one for someone 6'4"...)

How does the weight of a LP affect the sound. Especialy the chambered ones. Thanks

Weight must effect tone but I dont have a bunch of
Les Pauls like I have amps so Im not the best guy to
answer that but I must say this:

I cant stand the thought of a Gibson Les Paul with
holes or chambering, to me Its not a Les Paul, it should
have a different name. I will never have one that for sure.

I avoided a USA model Gibson Les Paul and got an Ephiphne
Slash Gold top that has no weight relief and is a damn fine
gutar.
