Hey WOT what's up, you have some great Strats already, sure ridiculous coin and they could conceivably even make these in Mexico..but you know they way it goes this day.
What is your feeling about the maple cap years, do you have a maple capped neck Strat. I had a discussion over on USA Charvels forum with Jim Shine, I don't know if you know of him, but he is quite an authority on Fenders especially, knows John Sprung from the old days, whom I have also met back when he was in Maryland. Apparently there exists a large headstock maple cap neck as early as 1965 and there were some in 1967, the majority being 1968-70 or so.
Do you happen to know since Jimi's favorite two Strats were the black and white maple capped models from 1968, what the the tonal difference is as far as the transfer from the neck to the body?
With the skunk strip, the neck is more of a one piece, with the cap the neck is two pieces of maple with the truss rod inserted into the neck and covered with the board.
I noticed a big tonal difference with my Washburns, going from my SS80 with a skunk strip to my recently acquired maple cap necked version..the maple cap one also has a quilt maple top,to the poplar body, so that would account for some differences in tone and the cap isn't that thick.
Just interested in your take on maple capped neck Strats as they are one of my favorite post CBS necks.

Im actually having a maple cap neck built for a project strat and I was curious of that very thing. A friend had said the maple cap makes you lose bass response due to the fact that its glued on there. But then when I was discussing whether to go 1 piece or maple cap to the luthier he said it would increase bass response if anything because they can make the glue joint actually stronger than the wood, transfering vibrations well.

Yes increased bass response was very pronounced and one of the most noticeable changes, the differences between my two SS80's, besides the maple body cap, is the Gotoh Floyd, versus the OFR I have a real one from when FMIC first bought out Floyd Rose. The pickups are identical as are the pinwheel truss rounds, so it's an interesting experiment.
I eventually want a '68 type Strat with a maple cap neck though, that is the bomb to me!!
