I've seen that the tuning for the guns n roases song, sweet child O mine is standard EADGBE.

I can tune my guitar to that, try and play the song and it sounds like total crap, totally out of tune. Yet simple chords like D and G sound fine.

If I tune it so it sounds just right by using my ears and comparing my guitar to the song then it sounds fine...but I try to play the D chord or G chord and it sounds like crap. Any ideas? thanks.

No it's actually a total different tone. Tuned to standard, sweet child o mine sounds aweful.
Tuned to the song, it sounds ok while normal chords sound bad.
