Guitar Finish question ?

I was wondering if I can spray nitro on a neck that has been tung oiled ? The oil has cured over 6 months or so. Do I need to sand it off before spraying the nitro cellulose ?

I just picked up a unfinished maple warmoth neck. Thought about tung oiling it.. Why do you need nitro over oil? Is it unstable with the oil finish?

Keep in mind that oils like Tung and Linseed dry to a very hard finish. Gunstocks oil is just a combo of the 2. Over time the grain will come back up a bit but the oil is deeper than a regular finish and still has the wood sealed.

I wanted to know about the compatability, cause the color of the tung oil is much easier to get at what I like (very light vintage amber) than spraying precolored nitro. I dont have a sprayer, where I can add the right amount of color. I have to rely on cans. I find that the tinted nitro is way to yellow for my liking.

I simply get the right color with the tung oil (I will add another tinted coat) and let cure for a couple of weeks, then hit it with a couple cans of clear gloss nitro. I still need to get the 'F***er 'waterslide decal.

Plus, I love the smell of tung oil :D .

Yeah, the nitro has a amber tint that actually can darken with age. I think its due to natural sunlight but I could be wrong. Doesnt really give you a natural finish if you ask me.
