My D-Tuna observation

Post by JimiJames » Fri Apr 19, 2013 1:09 pm

Posted this in the General EVH & Van Halen Discussion section:

Waiting for my order to come in, I just thought about the process and now realize that
a D-Tuna will not work for me unless I have a dedicated drop-D guitar.
The bridge has to be fixed or anchored. Well, ALL my Strat's, SuperStrat's, & Stratocaster trem's float.
So that means useless to me since I float them. :?
As you would think the fine tunes are out of range if it were to be engaged with a floating bridge.
I don't want to add a 4th spring to stiffen the tension although it does mean that it is possible for someone to float and use the D-Tuna,
but it won't feel right and your techsneak suffers...

Just thinkin' out loud here so that it may help in someone's future decision's incorporating this in their build plans...

I wonder if this would do the trick?

You can try this... http://www.fu-tone.com/catalog/index.ph ... cts_id=219" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I saw this when browsing the site but I don't have any personal experience with it.
I'm not sure that it will work, but if you want the D-Tuna, may be worth a shot.

Don't float anymore!

I think the D-Tuna is aesthetically unpleasing to me. I'd rather have another Floyd guitar set up for Drop-D specifically that put a D-Tuna on a Floyd.

Sorry. My ship's gotta stay afloat and aesthetically irrelevant since this thread is on functionality....

Yeah man. I'm reluctantly agreeing with that answer and facing the truth.
Gives me an excuse to pick up another Explorer type...
When you've played a whammy for nearly 35 years from jump street,
the best advice I could give to avoid frustration making a guitar conform to one's technique, is that answer.

There are Po's & Con's to this if I were targeting as such, but will not work for me in particular.
Guys are lucky who are technically hardtail players. If one were targeting a specific goal in mind,
you could look at it as the mass factor for someones preference in a build that had a FR route.
If it had a traditional, that's something completely different, but the same perspective in denseness.
A Stratocaster hardtail is something completely different.
A Tele hardtail is something completely different.
A Traditional with SteelBlock flush mounted & setup is something completely different.
A FR flush mounted & setup is something completely different.
An ABR is something completely different.
A Leo Quan is something completely different...
The ONLY option I have is back to what I've always use in this application with 2 steel springs cranked all the way down with the shortest claw I can find. I can live with that as I have been all these decades, but miscalculated for this future build.

If stiffeners work for others in their technique, that's great !
I realize there are players who need the pull up to reach a certain interval in their phrasing, like Vai for example.
Then you have the same, but different with Mattias Eklundh or Beck even.
These things hinder players like these and are more useful to part time users who need just to convey a single idea in a single phrase.

... oh well, I still have this Gotoh 1996T waiting for a home. ... and soon a D-Tuna, lol.
Still undecided what to do with it and since I never played this model before to know how it feels. (Last of the criteria to be seen)
Could end up selling it or as the fixed drop D set-up. Or, if it smokes, into a regular build...

The D-Tuna is the best looking thing ever to come out for trem systems....
It balances out the ungodly looking trem arm that just dangles about needlessly....
its kinda like having a paddle...but without the creek or a canoe..... :drummer:
Trem bar players, like Beck, VH, Hendrix and Jimi James, just use it for a crutch...
cause they are out of musical ideas......KNOTT...LOL
Jimi I have several of dem der guitarz, one has a D-Tuna...dont efen use it....much...
but it is a thing of beauty...
But on a serious note.....B# for example.....HaHaHa.....
You really need to have guitars in all colors....thats what matters most..... :hairband:
Pink ones work best for pulling the chicks...aww yeah vaby!
one last thing....if play a dobro, work the dojo, to find your mojo!
I want my music waking up the dead...
Dont tell me to turn it down

if its not loud enough you must be really old...huh,what,what did you play?

I've edited the topic title to reflect that it's more an observation than it is an issue.
Just wanted to possibly help someone pointing that out, maybe overlooked that.
Which is keeping everything exactly the same simply by adding the D-Tuna...

Note to self:
When building ship, do not build it in dessert. :?
