Which Metro to build-Warren Haynes & Eric Johnson tones?

First of all, I would really appreciate any help you could give! I have read through the forum and listened to the sound-clips, and I know that I want to build a Metroamp (they all sound great in their own way), but I am not sure which one to build. Maybe all this reading made me a bit more confused. Eventually it would be great to build them all, but since I am still in college this first one is going to have to be it for now.

I really want to approximate some of Warren Haynes tone with a Les Paul, or Eric Johnson

First its a really cool thing about the old non masters, different guitars made all the diff in the world. Eric Johnson played like 67 68 spec super leads but so did Eddie Van Halen. You know what gets a great Eric Johnson sound a little earlier is the jtm 45..sounds killer with a strat. There are some cool vids of people playing les pauls thru Georges amps and they sound very Allman Brothers like. Go browse around for a while ask some questions and youll get what you want. Im thinking you should just build the plexi kit and then fine tune to taste.

Erics settings are very 'pedal-oriented' and bassy. They have his settings for everything pretty much mapped out on his sites forums. I dont think you need a tube driver for the lead sound, just a nice overdrive, but he has the channels jumped and the bass up all the way, and the mids midway and the Hi's very low. Also the output on his Tube Driver overdrive arent really pushing the amp as people really think. Its pretty low and the EQ on that pedal are all the way off. Without the pedal those settings on a marshall would be muddy/fuzz city. Useless.

I did a clip below of cliffs but its pretty bad quality but it works. I used the Radial Tonebone Classic which Eric is supposed to be using these days. Theyre supposed to come out with an EJ model if they havent already.

I really think the whole key to his sound is having it swim in delay. Thats about it.

Thanks for the replies. I am mainly interested in a sound similar to Haynes, and I guess I am on the fence trying to figure out whether a 10XXX or a 12XXX would be more appropriate.

Then I heard those Eric Johnson clips without all of his delay & fuzz, and I got really interested in that as well!

I guess I will start with everything needed to build a 67/68 plexi and tune to taste!

Ill tell you what. the difference between 10 & 12 is the difference between Bass and Lead. The metro 10 and 12 series are very similar and can easily be modded to be one or the other accept the 10 series will use a different output transformer. Other then that people tend to use lower filtering in both and El34s. Its just the 67 has the bass/jtm values.

I'd say go with the Eric Johnson Tone. It's a more distinct and elusive tone - more musical, I'd say.

The video posted above shows Eric playing through the new Marshall Hand Wired amps. It sounded great in the video. However, if you have heard Eric's recent tone on his recordings like "Beck's Bolero" it is not as smooth as his Venus Isles and Ah Via Musicom tones, which were from real '67 and '68 plexis.

Hope a Metro can replicate that vintage tone better than a 1959 HW.

he also has a Black Flag 100 watt head, the one on the chair as well as a real '69 Marshall.
I'll bet EJ's HWwas carefully selected from hundreds..

Still sounds like EJ pretty much hasn't changed although he is the first major artist to use a HW 1959 that I've seen.
