Which kit? (a bit confused)

Post by waylay00 » Tue Oct 07, 2008 8:14 pm

I'm looking to build my first amp using a MetroAmps kit. Specifically, I'm looking at building a Marshall 100w plexi style head.

I've noticed that several people mention different year plexis, like a "67" or a "68" or a "69." Which year is the " 100 Watt Plexi Style Amp Kit " supposed to replicate?

And I also noticed under the "67/68 Bare Bones Chassis Kit" that there is an option for a "complete 68 specs package," but it is an additional $1200. How is this different from the kit above?

Basically, I'm looking to a build a plexi that recreates that classic non master volume, EL34 crunch sound. For example, a tone I really like is from the Humble Pie Rockin' the Filmore 1971 performance. I also like the 100w Plexi tones of Angus Young, Eric Johnson, and Hendrix.

What would be the best kit for me?

The kit is a '69 spec and sounds killer... if it is your first build, I'd start with that and you can modify later if you wish... I never changed mine from stock except for adding NOS Mustards and NOS AB resistors... there is also step by step directions for it as well... for any of the variations, you'll have to comb the forum to find your answers... doable, but not as straightforward... good luck and welcome to the forum!

Exactly what the man said.

Once you have built it and 'run it in' for a few weeks you can post here to say what you like and do not like and people can help you in the right direction regarding tweaking it to suit you (Rockstah did this largely on his own  but he certainly knows what makes thinks tick now)

I'd start with the standard plexi 100 kit as barebones one doesn't have full tech support actually.

Theres very little sonic advantage to the earlier year kits if all the values are made the same. The reasons are more aesthetic, vintage/accurate, novelty, its also a lot more convenient in a lot of ways but it certainly can be done just as easily with a 69 kit. Any filtering, transformers, tubes, values- from a 66-68 can all be used in a 69

Hard to say since all those bands listed used different model amps. In other words a Plexi is not a Plexi is not a Plexi. Or not all Plexis are all the same. But build any of the suggestions above and if you need to tweak it you have a place to start.

I'd go for a '67 Plexi considering what guitarists you have listed...
Jimi is famous for the JTM45/100, Angus well just about any i guess, but i liked his JTM45 sound the best, EJ used afaik a '67 and '68.... so i'd go for a '67 or maybe even a jtm45/100
