If I use the Mgnetic Component OT what will I find lacking compaired to the drake?

Cheers,

Dennis.

is not that it is lacking. its just that the dagnall type OTs lend themselves better to the more distorted 1959/2203 tones than the drakes IMHO. I personally prefer drakes for the early 100w tone.

A 1.5" Dagnall-style OT is fine for this type of build, if it's modeled after the C1998. This would be a late 10-series, or 12-series Superbass, though. I don't really know how your "JCM800"-style OT would differ from a C1998. Might want to check with the manufacturer.

Is the PT a laydown or a standup?

You can basically follow the 12-series layouts, build journals, etc., which are floating around here. Just build the main circuit board according to bass specs.

Then you just have to decide on your filtering. The mains filtering is kind of a given at 50uF (two 100uF caps in series), but you can tweak the screens and PI to your liking. I like 16uF on the screens and 100uF on the PI. A little more on the screens won't hurt, though. The choices here depend on your playing style, how you like the amp to respond...

I recently built a similar amp with a push-pull switch on the second volume pot, allowing me to swap in a 4700pF bright cap - basically switching between late-67 Superbass and Superlead.

If you're adamant about it being a "10-series Superbass like George's", then you don't really have the right OT. But, in any case, just follow the 12-series resources around here, and build the board to bass specs.

Here's a good comparison of the 2" Drake OTs versus the 1.5" Dagnall OT. Scroll down to the post by c e r r e m.

I second the above.

If you really want the authentic thick tones of an early superlead you would probably need the 2" Drake.

Nothing wrong with building a 12 series type superbass and the tones will be very similar.

For that spec = shared cathode, 56/250 tone stack 0.1PI output couplers, 47k/8ohm NFB with 32/32/16/64/50 filtering

Do as Kevin has and switch a 5000pF bright cap for variation 8) 8)

:D Thanks folks, I will start working on the amp after I've finished three other builds that I'm working on...
Will keep you posted on the progression etc. Thanks for all the input for now.

Cheers,

Dennis.
