What's the difference between the two MVs in the store?

Post by jw71 » Thu May 27, 2010 8:34 am

I'm getting ready to order a 100 watt kit, and want a MV in it. So what's the difference between the Metroamp PPIMV and the LarMar PPIMV? Is one more difficult to get right than the other? Is there a difference in sound?

The LarMar is the usual preferred option. The other style has been around a lot longer, and the LarMar was specifically tweaked to be less intrusive to the amp, and therefore the resultant tone (read the massive thread!!!!)
However, they both get fizzy when cranked right back to the minimum, but most guys that can get one with PPIMV's seem to prefer the LarMar style.
So I like purple, okay!!!!!!

The Lar/Mar has fail safe resistors (2.2M) from the wiper terminal to the bias reference. This is almost a must have in case the wiper ever loses contact with the carbon trace in the pot you don't lose bias.
