NEED HELP ON AN ESTIMATE (Special '69 Superlead content)

Post by Mass » Wed May 23, 2007 12:13 pm

HI all,

Sorry if I have double posted...
I have a question for George, or whomever.

I'd like to buy Georges '69 Superlead kit, but I want it to accept 6L6GC's.
Is this an easy request to put together, or not?
Also, I'd love a price on that if someone could help out as well.
I'd opt for the Sozo's and all the higher grade options.
I currently have a Marshall 1959 SLP RI (NO FX LOOP).
I want to order a '69 PTP board kit.....thats all. So, then I can replace the stock PCB for Georges '69 PTP board.
I am told that the board will A) Make repairs and mods easier, B) The componets in Georges kits are superior to the stock RI componets, so the tone quality will improve.

Other than that I have the entire rest of the amp.
So I would want to order the '69 board kit, AND if it by itself the componets will accept 6L6GC's that would be perfect. If not, I was requesting to have the proper resistor for the 6L6GC application.

My 1959 SLP (RI) stock currently has a 47K resistor from the factory, and at the lowest bias pot adjustment, just catches my SED=C= 6L6GC's perfectly.

Additionally, I am REAL good at soldering..how bad a job is it to put one of these boards together?
I have a feeling that the board wouldnt be so bad, its the PCB/PTP transition I am worried about.

Thanks for the help,
Mass

I do not think your tone will be improved just by putting a PTP board in and simply substituting one for the other.

Improved tone will come with improved components (a lot of builders like Vintage Sozo caps, I only have enough 'mustards' for one more build and some restos).

Tweaking your settings to suit you is easier with PTP. You could try a rolling programme,ie:

Board(with quality components)+Tubes->Output trannie->Component subs

The OT will affect the sound more than the board swap, and probably more than the tube swap as well. Swap your OT for Georges 'Dagnall' clone, along with what you are already gonna do, and I think you'll get your desired effect, although I personally would recomend not changing tube type. Try a EH6ca7, as it is compatible with el-34's (no resistor changes) and also adds a slight 6l6 flavor ( increased clarity, punch , and headroom) as compared to el-34's.
