Newbie here/Advice On 1st Build

Post by Wagster » Sun Sep 02, 2007 10:43 am

Hey Guys,
This is my 1st post and I'm getting ready to build my 1st(Metro) amp.I need a little advice on which amp to build.I'm looking for tones in the vein of Free, Bad Company and Joe Bonamassa.I was thinking about either the JTM45 or the 68 plexi. Can you attenuate the 68 enough for club gigs w/o loosing a lot of tone?I'm worried that the 68 will get me kicked out of the clubs :P I'm going to run a AC30 for my cleans and the Metro for my dirty tones.

Thanks,
Billy

If you want all those old school tones, a JTM 45 will do them but a '68 plexi will do them better. As for good tones at lower volumes, a couple of guys here have modded a Ken Fischer design producing a very nice overdrive tone at low volume.

Rockstah nailed EVH's Eruption at bedroom levels

Dont dismiss the plexi for cleans. I love a good warm Marshall clean. All you need to do is throttle back the guitar's volume control like they did back in the day.

I think I'm going to try the 68 build.I just read the thread about Rockstah's mod and it sounds like something I'd be interested in.

Thanks,
Billy

Read, read more, and read even more. Learn the stages of the circuit you are building and what purpose each serve. You are guaranteed to encounter issues... the level of understanding of your circuit will dictate how efficiently you diagnose and resolve these issues. Be patient and always exercise the basic safetly rules of draining filter caps and keeping one hand in your pocket when measuring voltages.
