How much does the Tone Stack affect the sound?

Post by jctaudiodesigns » Wed Nov 21, 2007 9:19 am

Just curious, how much does the tone stack affect the sound of the amp, especially when dimed?

Has anyone tried to put in a switch to go between 2 different tone stack configurations?

The 56k/250pF tonestack makes the amp more Fendery - no surprise really.

The higher you go with that slope resistor, the more Fendery it will get and you loose that characteristic 'Marshall' low-mids tone.

I've got a pot on one of my high-gain builds were I can dial-in the value of the slope resistor. Probably not the smartest idea I've ever had with such a high voltage across that pot, but it works and is a cool feature for matching the low/hi midrange with different guitars.

That almost sounds like the same effect the pre-amp boost switch on
a Dumble has.

here's a cool free program to download that shows what each value change does to the tone stack.
