Hi everyone,
I need advice on which era' amp I should build. The only four input Marshall I have ever played is my 1987S RI from 1989. I am looking for clean headroom, as I like to use my pedals for distortion. I do 50's and 60's type pop, british invasion stuff. Of course I still want the classic plexi distortion that can only come from one of these when they are cranking. But I want to build one that will not begin distorting until maybe one-third or higher on the volumes. Thanks for the help.

I have no problems getting travelocity-gnome style 'redonkulous' amounts of clean volume out of my 50w Metro. Absolutely way too freaking loud for just about anybody. And yes, that's on about 4. I can defer to Gutpile on the comparisons between the various metros, be it 45 or 100, but the 50 is a great choice. As well with the 50, there are ways of making it even cleaner. As Neikeel pointed out, one can lower their dropping resistors on the main board from 2 8.2k's (some are 2x 10k's) to a single 8.2k, and that will raise the headroom a bit.
