1959 SL hiss and power transformer hum

Post by 313guitars » Sat Jul 03, 2010 1:43 am

Hey Guys,

I've finally been able to test out my 5 month old '59 SL build at full power and I've gotta say, I'm a little disappointed. First off the only mod I put in was the master volume in the back. Everything works fine on the amp but these are my problems. There is a lot of hiss coming out of it even when the guitar isn't plugged in. It naturally gets louder as I turn the volume up. I found that once I turned the MV all the way up the amp gets microphonic so I'm thinking it might be v1.

Second problem is low output. I haven't tested the actual power (don't know how) but I know it's at least half as loud as my JCM800 2203. I have read the post about making the 470 and 470k resistor mistake. I'm pretty sure mine is fine but I'll check it when I pull this thing apart next. I'm not sure what's going on there but the amp sounds great other than the hiss.

2 other things have sort of bothered me so I'll throw them out there and see if you guys have any ideas. I know the presence pots don't actually do a whole lot in this model but mine doesn't seem to almost do anything. Normal?

Second, my PT has a loud hum while powered up. Is this normal? My other amps don't seem to have it but I thought maybe it's normal for the standard Metro model.

Thanks guys,

J-C
