Temperature settings

Post by Stretchy » Tue Nov 16, 2010 7:12 pm

Hey all!

I have a Weller Wes51 and I'd like to know the proper temp to set it to in order to build a 100 watt kit. I see here that the pots are kinda touchy to solder properly and I'm afraid to put to much heat to it. What is the proper temp settings for...

1. General soldering in the amp (wire, resistors...)
2. Pots soldering

Also, sub question... On my multimeter I have a choice of two positive leads. One for current 200ma and under, and another one for 200ma up to 10A. What lead should I use measuring things in the amp ?

Thanks

Well, you're not actually drawing any current when measuring voltages/capacitances/resistances (other than a very minute nominal draw due to the meter loading). You only draw current through the meter when measuring current (when you have to put the meter in series with the part of the circuit that you are measuring, and you will have to plug the lead into the current specific posts too).
Use either one for general work. Whichever is easiest. The higher rated one will probably have least internal resistance though.
So I like purple, okay!!!!!!

83.7% of all statistics are made up on the spot!

I use 350+C for general soldering

Yeah, I find that's where I tend to stay as well. On some parts, like ground lugs, I find I need to turn up the heat to make the solder flow properly onto the area. Conversely, on parts where you have a solid core wire attached, you may want to go lower than 350 as the heat very easily travels down the wire and melts the insulation, so lowering the temperature a little gives you more control. It takes a bit of experimenting, but around 350 sounds OK for general soldering.
