This page from Clay Finley's site is a great resource.
Wanna know which parts in your reissue weren't in the originals?
Here's where you'll find the answer.

Hey George! I just played a friends '74 Bass 50w over the weekend. The only thing changed on it was the power cord. It sounded awesome. It had tons of mojo! Check it out:

That is super clean. What a pleasure to behold.
Uh, I mean play really loud!

Ya know, I've been thinking a lot about 50 watt amps lately. I've always been a 100 watt guy (bet you couldn't tell  ) but I've often pulled two tubes.
I realize that doesn't really make my 100's into 50's. But it makes them awfully sweet.

Clay's site is fantastic! I reference it constantly.

I've often had dirty dreams about pulling the two outer tubes so i could retire the THD Hotplate in smaller clubs but then i always say no for some reason. I'll have to try it out this vacation and experiment like a good Country Boy.

I've been using a post phase inverter master volume and LOVE it! I'm installing one in my 1987x point to point board. I've got one in my '74 Super Lead and it sounds better than my Weber MASS (which I liked better than the Hot Plate). A lot of that power tube "sound" is actually the phase inverter going nuts. The only difference I hear is a slight loss of compression or "sweetness" that you get from pushing the power tubes.

I've heard of Weber MASS before but i don't know if they have a website. Do they?? I would like to compare my THD Hotplate with a Weber. I'm very satisfied with my THD but i think it would be interesting to compare the two myself.

Hey, CBS (and everyone else who hasn't been to Weber's site),

Go here: http://www.webervst.com/ and pick your speed (fast or slow connection). The next screen will show a picture of an American city (Cleveland, Dallas, Omaha, someplace like that). In the upper left corner of that picture is a link to info on Weber's "MASS" attenuator. There are links to other products of theirs in that picture, so drool over the other stuff, too.
I knew we should've taken that left turn at Albuquerque!

Wow! WAY different than the guts of the THD Hotplate and it's a lot simpler. A lot cheaper than the Hotplate too! I've had no problems with my THD Hotplate and am very satisfied with its tone so i guess this is another thing that's subjective.

You know, I really like the MASS better than the Hotplate. I think it's because the MASS uses an actual speaker for the load ... it FEELS more like you're playing through a speaker. More "bounce" or whatever you want to call it.

But like you said, tone is subjective.
