I just swapped out my stock 1987x choke with a MM Axiom rated at 10 Henrys. I made a clip and can hear the difference, but I'm not sure which I like best. Right now the stock choke wins out on clarity, but the MM seems a tad smoother. The difference is like comparing different preamp tubes.
I'm a firm believer in component burn in since I've documented clips of caps that were installed fresh and then recorded again after a couple of days. The caps DEFINITELY improve over time, smoothing out and sounding less congested.
I'm inclined to believe the same will happen with the choke since it's a pretty big chunk of metal. I also had to orient it differently to accomodate the space on my chassis. The MM has an exposed area on two side and they're facing the transformer and the filter caps. I'm kind of wondering if that does anything to the sound (magnetically or whatever).
I'm letting my amp cook all day, and then I'll make another clip to see if the choke sounds any better. I'll report back later.
