Hmmm... he had at least one quad of XF2 in early December... I passed on them for a quad of Siemens.

I think this is my first real reply on this page, other than to tonejones who I know personally. I am on the fence about nos tubes in my current amps. I own 2 divided by 13 amps, and ftr37 and rsa23 (for those familiar) as well as a Matchless Clubman. In the Clubman the nos tubes are a must. It sounds about 75 percent with new production tubes, its really night and day between a jj and a mullard. In the d/13's, with exception to the ftr, it has sylvania 6v6's, I think, nos pre's do make a difference, but I just dont feel it makes enough of one for me to keep buying them for those. I know the nos's will last longer, but Ive read about guys using the same tubes in these amps for a few years, which is good enough for me. I did some recording of the amp while swapping in and out tubes, which I may make a litte more formal and post here if anyone is interested. I could hear the difference between each tube and I think others could too. Anyways, now that my novel is complete.... hehe

neikeel, I know how Im going to do it, Im going to redo it this weekend. Ill try and get some combinations of the tubes in V1 and the PI, I believe the PI can make a pretty difference too. I will probably mic my 2x12 cab with a sm57, maybe a sennheiser e609 or 421, Im not sure yet, and all that will going into Pro Tools 7.3 Ill try and get the mic placements perfect so I dont have to add any eq or anything.. I keep you posted.

I just recieved my preamp tube from TT and there is a difference. It is somewhat subtle but there is more of a 3d quality and a complexity to the sound. The amp (JMP 2203) is now somewhat darker which is good for this amp as was a little bright for my tastes. went through all my tubes last night, and compared to the pres from TT. They were better than all of the new tubes and especially the tungsol reissues (told by a tech that it is a good tube). They are really not usable now that I have heard the difference. One of the 3 GT mullard reissues i ccompared sounded OK in comparison but the other 2 did not. Not very good consistancy for the GT's but a pretty small sample size. Want to try out some other NOS but must get some more funds.

Take care

Simply go together with your both friends 'Smith & Wesson' to the next bank and 'ask' for some more

Yea, that might be what it takes to be involved in this hobby. This tube stuff is sort of like getting involved with good wine, because once you taste the good stuff it is hard to go back. This forum is sort of like that too, once you hear the good tone of so many here it is hard not to want to get there too.

Take care
Dan

...and once you've tasted the NOS fruit, you can't go back.

I had some Shuguangs in the H-watt to start with. Yesterday I swapped them out with the NOS RFT/Siemens I got from TT. The Shugs were pretty good, but the Siemens - WOW.

Like jumping from AA ball to the big leagues. Chevy Camaro to Porsche 911. Something like that... 8)
