Marshall debuts hand wired PTP amps

Post by VelvetGeorge » Sat Apr 03, 2004 10:55 pm

There's a super long thread over at the plexi palace boards about Marshall announcing hand wired PTP versions of the 18 watt and 100 watt Superlead. They also are making basketweave style cabs. Pretty cool stuff.

The verdict is out on how authentic they will be (and how expensive). Should be interesting, take a look.

Hey George,

I was checking that thread out, pretty cool thing happening with Marshall.
I didn't realize so many grown men could be instantly transformed into giggling school girls. :P IMHO
Makes your amp kit (or fully assembled) seem like a really good value.
Probably sounds at least as good as the real thing. Just a bunch of components right? :D
Be interesting to see what happens to the value of the "standard reissues"
they've been making. :?:

They can do what they want and they'll probably go ahead and charge way to much money for it too. I don't know if i'll ever buy another amp from them again.

Yeah, exciting as it is, I keep coming back here looking at your kits for what I'm guessing will be 1/3 the money, plus a few hours of good solid tinkering. I might have to bite as soon as I see a fifty-watt kit come around.

Note to self: get going on 50 watt kits.

Seriously, the 100 watts are doing well. So I'll likely get started on JTM45 and 50 watt kits (they use the same size chassis) soon.

George,

Since they use the same size chassis, would the 50/jtm45 be big box versions, or will that chassis fit a small box?

Oooh, I'd bite on either a fifty OR a JTM45, it's a toss up. Might come down to tranny cost, typically I see JTM45 trannys running 20-30% higher in price. I've got a baby on the way, gotta be thrifty, at least as thrifty as GAS will allow!
I'd try the 100watt kit but I know I've got no use for the extra 3dB volume. No point in assembling it if it can't get off the attenuator.

As cool as that sounds, I don't think I'd ever buy one. Building is way too fun and George allows you to pick and choose the components to best fit your needs. How can you possibly beat the value that George offers!!

That and I'd probably ruin the resale value by tweaking things too much!
