Re: Help me find Frank Levi, the designer of the Slash AFD amp !
While aware of the story about the infamous "amps", I wanted to venture into finding "the" amp without throwing down Big Clams for one!
Over the past few years I have been looking for "that" amp that sounded like the tone in my mind, so with I guess just pure luck I found a guy that sold me this marshall 1959 RI I think early 90s, and he told me this amp was from a handful of re-issues that were modified for a session guitar player in 1997 in the LA area.
He told me that this amp is what I am looking for! I plugged into this thing and at a very low volume I could tell this was "the amp" before ever cranking it up, after further inspection I found the amp to contain 6550 power tubes and miss-matched pre-amp tubes, I don't even think the amp had even had the back removed from 97 until I got it!
High gain but with tons of definition and clarity that marshall are known for is all in this amp, I can't stop playing it (Oh yeah I had to type this post)!

He modded 3 amps for me in the mid 80's and they sounded great! Nothing recently.StuntDouble wrote:Bobby,

Re: Help me find Frank Levi, the designer of the Slash AFD a
Hi there...I just got a jcm 800 50 watt (1982) combo I sent him in Oct/Nov to be modded and have to say I'm not happy at all with the mod. It sounded better as an original jcm 800. He's going back to look at the pictures and see what may be wrong...sksac wrote:I hate to bring back such an old thread, especially on my first post, but anybody else have clips on the mods done by Levi?
I'll try to post clips later on....

Re: Help me find Frank Levi, the designer of the Slash AFD amp !
Frank did make a copy of all schematics for me but they are personal and I'm not willing to part with them at this time. I had bought SIR Marshall head #34 from Nadine's Music in Hollywood. Although we modified this head in close to the same style as we did the others, it was a unique "bastard" of it's own. Of all the JCM800's we had at SIR at the time, I liked the sound of #34 the best, so it was selected to be the next adventure. We were just having fun at the time. -Glenn Buckley
