Just a test
Marshall 800 2203 #34 , greenback, sm57 capedge or near, gibson reissue 1993 or 1983 just bought it, 57 pickups, 1176 hairball compressor.
I used a Fryette power station PS100w in order not to risk burning the greenback,
set with presence and depth controls at zero, volume at half with Level on LO (so i have more volume and little attenuation), switch on brite and warm so simulate an impedance curve of a cabinet.
Also last time I had used the fryette but it was the PS2 50w which I set incorrectly with the volume almost at maximum to have the same volume between fryette and marshall, but it modified the sound becoming flooded, muddy.
presence 0 bass 0 mid 4 treble 5.5 master 8
1 clip gain 2 tortex 1.14
2 clip gain 5
3 clip gain 5 and i use another pick called chicken pick 2.6mm

That sounds pretty good. I'm not sure which one I liked best, they each sounded good, just slightly different. I think maybe #2, as it seemed to have a little more brightness to it, but they all sounded really good. Congrats, job well done!

Re: S.I.R. 100W SuperLead Schematic pt. II
obv I don't like it compared to the sound of the album where the sound is more 'metalish', i.e. without the mid-bass and with the highs more forward. This makes it even faster, ok it's mixed I know it. My guitar has 57 pickups, 300k pot volume and is not 50 wiring, I'm thinking of getting myself a complete 50 wiring kit so I can put it in gibson who don't have one and where I would like to have it
I'm not sure whether to find the right position for the SM57 or try to randomly remove some midbass in the daw.
I could try to move the mic away from the speaker, so as to have less mid-bass frequencies...
I'd like to have a comparison with your recordings of #34, can you record?
I mean everyone, not just you, Unique

Why not just move the cap connection at each volume center lug in order to have 50"s wiring? Or do you want 500k pots as well? No need to change the tone pot connections because the pot is only acting as a variable resistor either way, so there is no need to alter the tone pot connections.

I have attached a picture of the electronics in this gibson, it also has the metal plate.CoffeeTones wrote: ↑Wed Jan 11, 2023 9:40 amWhy not just move the cap connection at each volume center lug in order to have 50"s wiring? I remember I did as you say, in other gibsons I've had, I don't remember the result. Maybe it's better to remove everything and replace it, I'll think about it.
Thanks also for the youtube links, I've certainly already seen and heard them, some are very old. however in these videos where they use greenbacks, the sound is right I think, more metalish and thinner
I would have preferred your recordings like you do for the #36 clips, however today I will try to move the mic 57 which to be honest I never move due to laziness, as the mic and speaker are in isobox.
greenback and v30 sound different with the #34, in my opinion, with the v30 it is easier to get a good sound with just a sm57 comparable to the sound of spaghetti incident and songs from 2010, than using greenbacks
the strange thing is that some use treble and presence at 0 with master 8 and low gain, while others use the bass at 0 and raise the treble and presence, I don't know if it was due to different ways of mod #34 or simply how they position the mic sm57, anyway today I move the 57 to other positions

No need to change any components in the guitar to have 50's wiring except the tone cap connections at the volume pot unless it is just something you want to do. The guitar will sound more vintage / PAF like and more user friendly with the control adjustments. Easy to reverse if you don't like the results.

I agree with what Coffee says, and if I was you, I'd get yourself some 500k pots and you'll lose the 'low-mids' your describing. While you're at it, grab some Sprague .022uF 192p caps (these are cheap on eBay), any voltage rating will work fine. These caps are very transparent, and IMHO, they are the best sounding caps I've ever used. Also, they are what Slash has in his Derrig These things will 'liven' up your sound, probably a lot since you're using 300k pots. It will sound like you took a blanket off your speakers.

The old, yellow, Mallory 150 caps can sound nice in guitars too. Did you try those?

I just saw your pic of your electronics compartment. Get rid of the metal grounding plate, you don't need it and it's unnecessary weight. Not only that, but I think they are tone killers. For 50's wiring, flip-flop your caps connections, connect to the center lug on the volume pot, and to the far right lug (from picture angle looking down) on the tone pot.
Here you go, like this:

No need to mod the tone pot connections. It functions the same - adjustable resistor.Unique wrote: ↑Wed Jan 11, 2023 2:04 pmI just saw your pic of your electronics compartment. Re: S.I.R. 100W SuperLead Schematic pt. II
True. But with a 500k tone pot you get a more defined range to find sounds. It's not necessary, but since pots are cheap, and if you're going to be swapping pots anyway, you might as well do them too.CoffeeTones wrote: ↑Wed Jan 11, 2023 2:43 pmNo need to mod the tone pot connections.
