Needs a bit of tweaking to get the bass under control.
Change the second stage to 10k .1u and the 220k on the gain pot to 150k or even 100k.
150k and 10k/.1 sounds like this:

This sounds pretty darn good!
I agree, that one stands out from all of the others in note separation / detail and snarl.

It is very full and balanced sounding, but a bit hard to play. Also still a bit hard to dial in. It has either the clarity or enough crunch.

I really wish I had a LP though to try SCOM ‘cause this is the closest I’v gotten so far.

That's probably what the real 36 was, or not too far away.

So there’s no magic component that will fix my slightly sucky playing in this mod either???....... there never is.....

Now I would love to try a real LP and stick a 57 in front of it!

Oh well, my buddy is dropping off his ‘76 this week that he wants VH-ized so I guess that’s next. But maybe if I lend him this amp he can fire it up in his studio.

I don't know, this sounds like it has something going on in the low mids that just sounds a little off to me. Or it sounds like you've loaded up the preamp with all JJ preamp tubes. That's the sound I'm hearing with these takes. It's like the low mids are too thick, or a bit too pronounced, and its kind of masking the mid to high mids a bit.

Well to be honest I have no idea what pre amp tubes are in there... could be JJ for all I know....

But it's gotten to the point where I struggle a bit to find a setting that I like for both rhythm and solos. So it usually ends up a bit more gainy than it should be. You know, when in doubt, add more gain.......

I have tried the most obvious changes to this spec as well and I keep coming back to this. Like doing 2k7/.68 on the third cathode like the FL schematic CT posted or 3k3/.68 like Duke has mentioned, but there nothing major going on with either. I keep going back and forth but .47 sounds a tiny bit tighter. .1 presence also sounds good with this spec, but when going back and forth again .68 just sounds fuller and the whole mod sounds more balanced. Adding anything now just overloads everything like we were discussing two pages ago. I also did the 120p no 150k on the first pot like mk7 and that sounds really cool, but moves it away from the AFD tones.

25k / 4k7 / .1 or .68 pres and / or start minimizing the 25u on stage 1 to 10u, 5u or 2.2u. If that doesn't do it for you, try stage 1 CC reduction in increments, possibly with the 150k adjustments. I agree that you may need the low gain, China made, preamp tubes as in the 80's amps.

Will see what tubers are in there and yeah I think this could be the time to look at the presence circuit. My friend just dropped of his '76 which is supposedly stock so it will be interesting to see what presence circuit is in that one as well.

Opened up the ‘76. It has stock .68 presence. 5k pot with a 4k3 resistor?!?!?!?

Were they all over the place in 76-77 or is this how that wired the .68 presence?
