Wood Clips

Post by rgalpin » Thu Mar 29, 2007 10:16 pm

Inspired by the recent postings about the woody marshall tone in some of the early VH live youtube clips, i am attempting to get that tone. it's a long way from where i've been so i'm guessing it will be a long process searching for the components that allow for such head room and lively power in one crunchy punch. but here's my firstr step.

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemus ... dID=682367

Changed from the Merc to a '74 dagnall OT.
Replaced .1uF coupling caps of v3 with 022
Replaced 560p mixer cap with 500p
No MXR EQ boost - straight in
Still using 6CA7s
Still using 56K/250p tone stack

Nothing revolutionary here just taking it closer to a stock '69 but with low filtering.

I like it ! It seems a little tighter sounding than before, like how Fair Warning is slightly tighter than W. and C, First. Now you could get another variation to this by putting the .1 PI caps back in, and swapping out your tone stack with the 33/500. I like it, though, very open still, but with a little more "togetherness". Give us some more !

Awesome tone ! with an original dagnal, i settled on psuedo '67 spec. shared/820.68, .1pi but with .0022 v1b to keep some fluid sustain. also keeping 47k 8ohm tap. This lowers the gain a bit in a good way, and keeps all the feel and should give more wood. i find split cathode is a bit more squakey. not sure what you're runnin now. split sounds like?

cool - i'm pretty excited about the sound. that is with the 56k/250p tone stack. but i'm going to try the 33k/500. i'm trying to make all my component decisions based on what will limit low lows and the high highs - and i think 56/250 is the wrong choice for that. seems like 33/500 would be more wood. ya think?

i haven tried the 56/250 tone stack in a while but to my ears at the time it was too dark for vh.

i like the 56/250 better clip wise.
i may give a 300pf a try in place of the 250..your amp seems brighter than mine.

i thought i would like 33/500 better but i didn't.

the difference between the two was pretty obvious in the room. the 56/250 had more of a punch and sounded more "together." the 33/500 sounds like it's a little more compressed in the mids and that compression sort of has a smeared quality to it.

all these "wood clips" are a lot less distorted than the VH clips i posted previously. it's a much more difficult amp to play through. stuff doesn't just fly out of the amp. i have to keep pushing it. challenging. the clarity of tone is worth it - but i'm thinking that the true WOOD tone has even less distortion than this - so the amp is going to demand even more out of the player - if i keep going this direction, i'll have to get a better player!! :D
