Let's hear your "OTHER" tones!
Hey guys,
Lots of folks here in the pursuit of nailing Edward's tone, Jimi's tone, Yngwie's tone, AC/DC tone etc., and that's really great, but personally I'd like to hear the killer tones you have gotten that you thought were really cool, but not associated with a particular artist.
You know what I am talking about...
The tones that you come across and go "Damn, that's not Eddie, but it sounds wicked!". Or maybe you like a particular tone so much that it is YOUR signature tone, or maybe you just have your favorite "definitive Marshall tone". Whatever it is that you really like, please post a clip! I am always amazed at the width of sonic possiblities that can come from the various Marshall circuits, and there seems to be a lot of adventurist souls here, so let's hear 'em!

OK, I'll play....
Here's a few tunes off of my band's soon-to-be-released CD. I can't play like EVH or YJM, or anyone else for that matter...
Believe Me
Testify
Healer/Faker
Mainly used a '71 Marshall Lead-stickered Super Bass, but I snuck in a tweed Deluxe clone in a couple of places...

Right on guys!
This will be great...hopefully we'll get a lot of posts.
It's just cool to hear you guys in a more "personal" way. I admire the dedication it takes to clone someone's famous guitar tone, and there is a lot of reward in that to be sure, but I have to admit that I am more interested in what my "tone bro's" are doing for themselves. I mean, we all like to clone, but we also have our personal favorite tones too that are really more of an extention of our own personality - and THAT is what I want to hear! A lot of times our personal tones are as interesting as the famous sounds.
Yep, I forgot to mention that we should list the equip used for the clip, just for reference. Doesn't have to be a Metro or Marshall - it can be anything, as long as you really dig the sound.
Michael, cool stuff man! You guys have a very "Stones/Mott the Hoople" vibe going on there. Loved the tone on "Testify", nice solo in "Believe Me" too.

Thanks, glad you dug 'em....
On "Testify" the first guitar you hear is our other guitar player running a mid-60s SG with P-90s into a Hiwatt half-stack. The brighter guitar that comes in with the full band is my Les Paul Studio into the '71 Marshall. The solos are all the LP Studio/Marshall combo. I don't remember whether I used a pedal or not on any of them, but if I did it was probably a Catalinbread SCOD.
Now that I think about it, I used the tweed Deluxe clone for almost everything on "Believe Me," including the first half of the solo. I only used the Marshall for the wah solo. For that I used a '62 reissue Strat, a Teese Wheels of Fire wah, and an MI Audio Crunchbox into the Marshall.
Funnily enough, I had only gotten the Crunchbox about an hour before we recorded that solo. I plugged it in and liked the way it sounded so I used it for that one and for a solo on a tune which we wound up not using for the album.

Okay, let me post some stuff that sucks in order to encourage others that can actually play, like Michael, to post some stuff. These are big files, so broadband would probably come in handy. These are "originals", FWIW.
I recorded this a few years ago in my bedroom - full stack blaring into an SM-57 close to the dry cab and an Octava Mk319 a couple of feet from the cabs (cabs side by side, not on top of each other). Go easy on me, because at the time this was just an idea floating around in my head and I was sort of working it out "on the fly". I'll give the amp (not Marshall) and effects if interested.
Joy
I recorded this straight into Garage Band while standing in front of my computer. "Played" bass on the computer keyboard and added a drum loop from Garage Band. Again, I laid this down just so I wouldn't forget it so it's rough. Heck, everything I do is rough and sloppy so ...
Mind Deep
While I'm at it, no guitar involved here at all. Played this via computer keyboard and captured it "live" in Garage Band (GB is a very cool, inexpensive tool).
Ambient Attempt

"Joy" rocks and I don't think I've ever heard anything like "Ambient Attempt". Could say that the latter is similar to U2's "The edge" delay stuff but I thought there was much more texture involved with what you did compared to his stuff. Very cool indeed!
Man, I am glad you guys are "letting your guard down" (so to speak) with this stuff. It's really cool to hear YOUR voices, if you know what I mean. Like Toner said, "everyone has their own personality", and I think those personalities are just as interesting as the famous ones we all know and admire. Cloning is cool, but we are not talking about duplication in this thread, we are talking about CREATION. Eddie CREATED a sound, so did Brian May, Tom Scholtz, and all the guys that think about their OWN tone.
To me, creating your own signature sound IS the "holy grail". Afterall, that is exactly what all our heros did, so to truly follow in their footsteps, is to create your own sound, and not just duplicate theirs.
Was that too honest?
Ahhhh well...it's not to be taken too seriously, it's just food for thought...

I liked the tone on "Joy." I'm definitely interested in what gear you were using for the tune. "Mind Deep" is cool as well. "Ambient Deep" is interesting, reminds me of Eno's work back in the 70s. I wonder if I still have my copy of "Discreet Music?"
For "Joy", I played through my '78 Greco Explorer - all mahogany with a rosewood board and an 8.3k/A2 HighOrder even wind bridge pickup. I boosted the front a bit with a Boss GE-7 and that went into my Mojave PeaceMaker. PeaceMaker to HotPlate - HotPlate out to 1/2 of a G12H-30 loaded Mojave 4x12. The HotPlate Line Out went to a Rockman Stereo Echo and then an A/DA Flanger (set for Leslie) to a Peavey 50/50. One output of the 50/50 went to the other half of the Mojave 4x12 and the other 50/50 out went to a Marshall 1960A (circa 1980) loaded with G12-65s. Oh, and some good earplugs. Even with the HotPlate, this was pantleg flappin' loud.
As an aside, "Mind Deep" was done with a Pandora PX-4 straight into my Mac Pro sound in. The other tune I just played in one take on my keyboard. That was fun. I was trying to create snips that I could loop into something but couldn't get it to work the way I wanted so I just started recording and played it as you hear it. I figured Jimmy Page liked to keep songs warts and all, so there must be something to it.

I agree with your comments. I love VH-1 tone and chased it for years but these days I try to "rolll my own" as much as possible. It's still fun to learn and play covers, and chasing that tone helped in may ways, but I wish I'd captured all my own riffs I thought were cool over the years - those that you forget the next day if you don't play them a bajillion times the night before. Shame to lose all that. I've heard great stuff from folks on boards like this that were their own creations. Lots of "voices" out there. I'd just like to get to the point where playing the guitar seems easy. After 30 years at it, it still isn't to me.
