Gets a little cocky, doesn't he? Especially on the 5150 clip. I wish I had nothing better to do than to sit around in plaid shorts and play Van Halen on my dad's guitar all day!

At least he's done his gtr homework and isn't just another "poser". I know I couldn't have played that stuff at that age.

Yeah, no kidding, if I could play like that I would be strutting around like a f'n Peacock.

I wonder if he knows any theory? Or if he's just another kid playing crappy tablature off the internet all day, who couldn't even play a G chord if you asked them.

I don't know, good question. Does one learn to use his little finger to play by instinct, or is that taught? In one of his videos he makes reference to "his dad's guitar". That could be the teacher, or maybe just part of the motivation to do it.

When I was young my mom was very good on piano (and still is). When I was between 8 and 12 years old I was given piano lessons and to this day remember the drills and scales which finally became unbearable so I quit. 5 years later I liked the way a friend looked playing guitar in a rock band (not to mention the way Hendrix, West, Clapton and others played) so it was going to be MY WAY! This was going to be MY FUN and I wasn't going to be dragged down by SOMEONE ELSE'S RULES!

Someone once said that if you want to play golf you should take lessons right off so you don't learn bad habits. So by never having a formal guitar lesson I believe I may have gotten started off on the wrong foot (so to speak) by not using my little finger. But then, I play to what sounds good to me, not to "the establishment". Sometimes I watch this kid, or a Malmsteen video, or the like, and regret that. But then on the other hand (no pun intended), I don't feel like I'm in competition with anyone else- I just enjoy playing and recording. I have been under the assumption for the 30+ years I have played guitar "wrong" that anyone that uses their little finger was guided in some way by some teacher, either in human or written form. Hopefully the teacher also taught him chord names, and the like.

I would watch video's of Bands I liked. I would watch the solo. I was always bending and hammering and pulling off with my third finger. I remember watching the video for Van Halen's "Jump", and you know that fast acending lick that Ed ends the solo with ? He used his pinky, so I started practicing those 3 note per string 'rolling' sounding licks. I was always watching guy's hands as they played. I was very isolated from other guitarist when I was young, so I watched them on MTV.

all i know is this kid doesn't have a clue about what cap to put across v2a!!

man, there's alot of "unorthodox" players out there who can rip a guitar to shreds. be yourself baby!
