Yep, and I wish 'ol Phil had been able to do just that ("Give it Up"). That dude could really tell a story in a song and his riffs and melodies were awesome. Definately one of my all time favorite writers. Gorham, Robertson and Downey were/are also very bad assed

This one deeply moves me, Robertson always had a few notes in him that could just totally KILL !

that tone on jailbreak has a sweet silvery tone. love it
check out brian downey's timing and pattern of crash cymbals in this one. this is the kind of thing i never hear, a drummer using his gear to create and enhance the melody. this pattern of crash is a work of pure genius. it's not some jackass imitating dave grohl hitting the things randomly and without purpose. it's a work of mathmatical and melodic genius and it makes this the absolute HEAVIEST tune i've ever heard. grohl disciples (which is 90% of guys i run into) think all one needs to do is hit em hard and voila its a heavy song or with machinelike precision and it's some kind of feat. I totally disagree. Drums are for helping with the melody as much as they are to create the beat and time

this is the other tune where he uses the crash in the same way. fucking irish shuffle. love it. listen to that crash pattern the way the last one of the series resolves back into the verse.
I also have to disagree about his heroin addiction. yes it's sad to see him go early but without it, he never would have had the courage to get in touch with that side of himself that allowed him to access what he did. Especially nowadays, he'd be shamed off the stage for showing the kind of thing he did. who the fuck can sing with this sense of melody and timing and phrasing against the rhythm and with this kind of sincerity. It's lost forever, so at least he was here for awhile.

nice mellow version of this one. love the way the guitar uses the falling arpeggio vibe
