Lars solos were ALLWAYS the high point. The kind of majic was gone forever after the Dio albums. RB said why he split with Deep Purple was that (quote): "they were too Poppy and they SUCK".
RB & RJD was a dynamic partnership. Dio and Blackmore kept each other from falling off the edge. When Dio departed, Blacky got too poppy again and Dio went back to Hell.

To each his own. I, too, really liked the RJD era for Rainbow. But I thought "Down To Earth" was a great record. Yes, Rainbow got very poppy with JLT but then again, Blackmore never denied that and in fact said that he picked up JLT because he sounded somewhat like Lou Graham from Foreigner and was picked to target American radio. And one thing that I'll say for Blackmore's musicianship is that even when he was playing on blatant pop material, his solos always fit even if he only had 8 bars to work with.

If Blackmore were to do a Rainbow re-union, I'd prefer it to be with RJD, though.

no doubt he could put a virtuoso solo in the middle of "Mary Had a Little Lamb" but it wouldn't change the material base or the message: mary had a little lamb

Graham Bonnet's Voice on 'Down To Earth' Sounded like a 2x4 on a grater. The best song on the Album is 'Love's no Friend'

Personally, I liked what he did on DTE. I know some people don't like his voice but I do. I also liked what he's done with Malmsteen and Impellitteri. But then again, I like vocalists like Stephen Fredrick (Firewind, Kenziner), too.

I'm glad Blacky never started dink'in around with his index finger of his right hand on the fret board like all of the morons do these days. It would have took a lot of the talent out of it.>>
Imagine Billy Gibbons dink'in around like EVH>>Dink Dink Dink Dink.
The next time I get my chainsaw out I'll make you a recording of Graham Bonnet.
Dink Dink Dink Dink Dinking Around>>>HAHAHAHAHAHA

Killer!

EVH would be lost in that jazz interlude.

I like Graham Bonnet's voice better than Dio's and I like Ian Gillan's voice best of all but that's just personal taste.

Ritchie has known about tapping since 1968 when he saw Harvey Mandel tapping and Billy Gibbons probably saw Harvey too because Billy did a bit of tapping before EVH.

I think Ritchie viewed tapping as a party trick and wasn't interested in it.

Ritchie is a very good musician and not just a rock guy.
He gave up the guitar for a while and just played Cello.

Ritchie had a great wang bar technique before he gave it up because after EVH it became a novelty with everyone doing it.

Is this EVH admitting Ritchie was an influence, what next?

I'll give you that, JJ. I'll retract that statment until I hear some that jazz little willy played with dad. Emmit still has all the styles covered (more than most).

Maybe I'm showing my age, but I really like his late 70's to Mid Eighties tone. That thick and meaty Strat tone is to die for. That single coil edge, but will the balls and roar of a humbucker. I've always heard he used Majors, and the AC30 in the Studio is news to me.

For example: he sounds very single coil in the intro to Man on the Silver Mountain, but when RJD starts singing, it totaly sunds like a humbucker. I can get both tones really super close through my fav 12000, but I flip the PU selector switch from the Duncan APS2's to the JB when the snging starts

The closest I've heard anyone else get to that tone with staight up single coils, was through a Black Flag. So thick, the guy could play VH with Strat through it.

I have a Black Flag project going with this goal in mind. This has been a goal of mine for a few years now, but I've been working 70+ hours a week driving an 18 wheeler, so amp building has slowed down to just personal projects.

I wonder if the guy used hotter pickups,.... must have

OIr maybe he clicks on the treble boost when the singing starts

What's great about all these videos is that Ritchie's Strat's appear to be stock, stock pickups, no quarter pounders, ect.
Seventies style Strat and the cprrect era BSM pedal and you are off!!
Great great band, back when Ritchie actually played with the band!!

Mine sucked! My first real guitar in high school, 1975. Black w/ maple fingerboard (just like Ritchie's!). I didn't realize how much I didn't like it 'till I played my friend's '69 LP Custom and my other friend's strat. Who knew shit at 15??? Brian's strat btw is one of those stories you hear happen to other people (like WOT for instance!) Brian's brother owned a gas station, when he mentioned to the the shop owner next door that his kid brother wanted a guitar the guy said, "Oh I have one under the bed. My son played it a few times and gave up. You can have it for a few hundred bucks with an amp." What was it? Only a '62 sunburst with rosewood neck.......
