Randy Rhoads
This guy was an incredible talent who kept his own identity on the guitar with so many comparisons to Eddie Van Halen.
Personally, I don't hear it ... especially if you give the Bootleg from the 1981 show from the St. Deni theatre in Montreal a good listen.
Best live Randy guitar tone ever!

I hope all of you would go to the audio section on the left side of this page.

There is a 3 part Audio guitar seminar with Randy as he answers questions
about recording, Ozzy, How he landed the Blizzard of Oz gig and he takes requests from people and plays some truly amazing passages thru an amp with no effects with hardly any gain on the amp.
If you don't know Randy, give this 3 part seminar a listen.
You will quickly realize what an amazing talent we lost.

Randy was the main reason I started playing. He was such an inspiration in my "angry teen years".
That seminar recording is pretty cool. Could you imagine being able to talk with him and then see the concert later that night? Wow!
Looking back now, I don't really care for his tone (or at least the way it was recorded). However, his playing will always move me. I still get goose bumps listening to the solo in Mr. Crowley.
I always thought it was cool that he took guitar lessons (mainly classical) while on tour. He had a passion for learning and didn't have a big ego.

How funny that you would mention that!AnotherBrother wrote: Seems like he picked up a British accent from hanging with Ozzy.
A good friend turned me onto those seminars about 2 weeks ago and I thought the exact same thing!
but, what a down- to- earth guy on those tapes...my kind of guitar hero.
The best site for ALL of the Randy/ Quiet Riot and Ozzy bootlegs is currently down.

I think if didn't double everything it would be very thin. it's already very buzzy.darkbluemurder wrote:What's wrong with his tone? I like it - great aggressive midrange, lots of harmonics, surprisingly little bass. But many guitarists use little bass, see Michael Schenker, Robben Ford (just to name a few).

I actually loved Randy's tone, and find it hard to believe that people are knocking it. Everybody back in the day was trying to get his tone. I will admit to not likeing the production quality of the "Blizzard Of Oz" album. Too many tracks of single riffs, sorta made it mushy, and his lead tone was a bit shrill. On "Diary Of A Madman" though, Randy got one of the best tones ever. Bootlegs from this tour (as well as the 'Tribute' album) show him with the fattest baddest tone around. While Ed's tone had started declining ('81-'82), Rhoads tone absolutly killed, going stereo, eq boosting, distortion +, and loud as hell Marshalls.

I posted links to one of the BADDEST LIVE Ozzy concerts.
Now they took it down.
I'm telling you guys, you would go WHAT WAS THAT if you heard his playing at that Montreal show.
Nothing like the studio stuff and FAR better than that live tribute album.
sigh.........allright ........maybe you guys need to give me your e-mail addresses, I've got some Mp-3's you all need ASAP.

I don't think his tone was bad but it isn't one of my favorites for that style of music. Neither of those first two Ozzy albums were produced very well, IMO. That's probably a big part of it.Tone Slinger wrote:I actually loved Randy's tone, and find it hard to believe that people are knocking it...
I think what I hear and don't like is the Distortion+. There's kind of a fizzy overtone that I don't like. He also didn't use Celestion style speakers so that may be part of it.
He was still a great player, regardless.
