Walter and Jimi, you both make an excellent point, many of us hardcore Malmsteeners hope for the same thing.
When Yngwie plays in a band setting he is more disciplined and really kicks musical ass.
Freely admitting he must be in total control and not a band player has set YJM back more than it has advanced him, imo too.
As he is maturing he may well fall into that role, let's hope.

More Duck info, I had hoped to buy this replica guitar in 2005 but as it wasn't available yet, I chose a HW stack and we know the rest    !
My guy at Scottsdale GC, has a direct line with the Fender Scottsdale marketing guy, so here's hoping??
The Duck: Yngwie's Malmsteen's 1972 Fender Strat,"
Guitar World, August 1994
[ Sidebar text that accompanies Anne Petty's centerfold photo of The Duck]

This 1972 Stratocaster, nicknamed "The Duck," is certainly the most celebrated of Yngwie Malmsteen's guitars. "I was in Japan last year for a big music convention," he says, "and while I was signing autographs, lots of fans asked me to sign guitars that were total copies of this one--right down to the Donald Duck sticker on the headstock, the 'Play Loud' sticker on the body and the Ferrari decal on the back."

Like most of Yngwie's Strats, this one is fitted with DiMarzio HS-3 pickups in the bridge and neck positions, with the original pickup still in the middle, and the standard Fender bridge. The maple fingerboard was scalloped by Yngwie himself in 1980 and it was refretted at least once, in 1987, following an experience neither Yngwie nor the guitar will soon forget. "I was playing 'Queen in Love' in Anchorage, Alaska, when an over-enthusiastic fan threw a half-empty, one-liter, bottle of Jack Daniels onstage," Yngwie recalls. "It hit the 17th fret so hard, it popped right out of the wood!"

Yngwie bought the guitar in the late Seventies, from a drummer auditioning for his band in his native Sweden. This Strat has been pictured on the cover of numerous Malmsteen albums and is the guitar used to play all the solos on his Grammy-nominated Yngwie J. Malmsteen's Rising Force (Polydor, 1984). "It's not my favorite Strat," says Yngwie, "but for some reason it's one of my best-sounding ones. It's been my main guitar since '78. I used it 99 percent of the time in Steeler and Alcatrazz, and I've played it on all my tours. I'm retiring it from road work this year. I don't want it to get stolen or more beaten to death than it already is! This puppy's been through a lot, from constant use and abuse onstage. The headstock has broken off at least six times, and I used to put my cigarettes out on it all the time. [A burn mark below the input jack testifies to Yngwie's use of the Strat as an ashtray.] I'm not very kind to my instruments. Sometimes I'll throw my guitar high into the air, but a spotlight may get in my eyes when I try to catch it. So rather than let the guitar break my hand, I let it crash onto the floor."

Like Hendrix and 'Black Beauty', Clapton with 'Blackie', Blackmore and that black w/white pick guard, maple neck (used alot on 'Machine Head' and the 'Made In Japan' album, or Uli Roth with his 'White Star', as he call's it strat, SRV and his #1, Malmsteen and that very yellowed, once olympic white strat, the Duck', also hit tone Nirvana.

I dont think it can be totally explained with words, but it CAN be experienced and FELT, that is, what a great strat can sound like.

Why does he keep pulling those parody vids? They're absolutely hysterical!

He's a wonderful player, with some of the most precise technique I've ever seen, but he really should lighten up a little.

Painkiller, great handle by the way.. :) , this is the reason the parody videos have been pulled..his manager/wife
Image
Yngwie actually has a great sense of humor about himself and is always self-deprecating, not taking himself seriously, but since April took the reigns, yes Yngwie is clean and sober, but she micro manages imo.
Believe me, other then my chance encounter with Yngwie at his Tucson gig in 2005, I feel it be next to impossible to break at all into the inner circle. Even his fan club, also run by a woman, much stuff is taboo, ect.
This is all very tiresome to us dedicated fans, but that's the way it is, but Yngwie is a great guy in person and he did an almost 2 hour souncheck, for that crummy venue where I saw him.
Sounded better than the gig btw..
So don't blame him for the censorship. I personally found some of the parodies to be mildly offensive, say for example if one was done of that other guy, you know who..then the uproar would be deafening, leave him alone, he's trying hard to be sober, ect..
I think YJM has much great work ahead of him and hope he breaks into film soundtrack work, as he is always talking about that!!
If I was to chose a female manager maybe this one would be cool...

Thanks, I love Priest!

I didn't realize all of that (guess I should have done my homework before I said something). I was just so disappointed when I found out those videos had been taken down. They were all good (Eric Johnson, John Myung, etc.), but Yngwie's were the best.

Like I said though, all joking aside, I adore Yngwie. I'm always in total awe of his absolutely flawless technique. I wish I could play like that. :)

By the way, you better watch how you talk about Ed! You might just be driving down the road when you realize your brakes don't work.

Thanks but I'll take my chances, I often have to bite my tounge here as what I really want to say, I can't, that's the price of freedom though.
I have nothing to gain by selling anything that makes one sound like VH, so I know the worshippers could care less what my opinions are, but have been chuckling to myself lately

We all want the early Yngwie tone, it is such a stunning sound and when he first came to prominence with Alcatrazz.
His wide mouthed vibrato, still unequaled in my opinion, and his crisp combination of bell like single coil sound, allied with massive power tube distortion, slammed in the front end by his DOD 250 pedal, it has all the best features, sustain, clarity and controlled distortion, but 'musical'distortion, awesome.
These days Yngwie's tone is more distorted, we all don't like that, but his chops haven't diminished, which is an awesome achievement after all these years and his earlier injuries.
Here is the other thread:

I would suggest joining the Malmsteen forum, but you won't have to as I pass on all the latest info from there!
Don't worry about straying into the 'other' forum, we all do occasionally, but I am happiest here.. :)

Hey ILMM great soundclips, Ratt, Page, VH, Thin Lizzy, you have down a lot of styles and are a great player, awesome that you are getting more into Yngwie, I know when I first started listening to him, I could listen to no one else for at least a year.. !
It is addictive and his melody style and use of arpeggios, harmonic minor, leads one out of the penatatonic box so to speak.
Great Clips keep up the good work, the newest YJM Signature model guitar, from 2007 up is the way to go, bullet truss rod, machine screw neck mounting, deeper scallops, exactly like YJM's #1, of course you could really save up for the new Custom Shop Duck replica which will be out this summer, but will be a lot more coin than the $1400 for the current YJM sig.
