Most definitely one the great unsung electric guitar masters. I wish they would release some of those complete shows on DVD.

I had the pleasure of sitting with him and talking about guitars over a couple of beers just a few months before he died. He was a mellow, laid back dude...

I saw him at Hofstra University in NY a bunch of years ago... he was one of the scariest looking guys I've ever seen. I dunno, maybe he was having a bad night. His playing was great, but he looked so angry and aggressive, we were afraid to clap for his songs. Didnt help that he cleaned off a bottle of Jack during the show. I seriously expected him to hurl it at an audience member at some point, just for looking at him.

I read the excellent book on Roy. He struggled with his demons until the end, and at times his guitar playing was like an exorcism of sorts.
Devils and banshees screaming out of his guitar, at times punishing the guitar, taking out his emotions physically on it  .
But it was a beautiful sound, haunting and he will never be forgotten, just hope he is in a happier place..

I forgot what a wild man he was. Definitely hear beck in there and Gilmour tones as well! (Hendrix, too)

Don't know if you posted this up there, Dave but definitely worth a re-post if you did...

I saw Roy at the Musician's Exchange in Ft. Lauderdale back in the late 80s, a year or two before he died....actually taped and still have a cassette of the show (though the cassette is in kind of bad shape...gets all warbly at the end). I always hear all these bad stories about his addictions and everything else but let me tell you, he was the nicest cat to me and my bass player. We were still in high school at the time and waited after the show to meet him (we saw the first set). He and his roadie invited us into his trailer and we just hung out and talked for like 20min. We told him our band (classic rock band) used to cover his verion of "Hey Joe" and he got a kick out of that. We thanked him for hanging out then as we were heading for our car, his assistant came out and gave us autographed glossies. It was a pretty memorable time for us.

The show itself was cool but a little weird. He had a younger drummer and bass player who sang some stuff, like "Slimey Limey" which turned out to be Zep's Rock and Roll.

908, did you get it yet?

I got mine last night. Great playing but a bit disturbing. He seemed kinda in another world. Not angry or happy just out there.
Tight lipped, sliding his jaw back and fourth....coked?

It says on the liner notes that he committed suicide. Didn't know that. I thought he just drank himself to death.

He hanged himself in a prison cell:

"Suicide and legacy

Buchanan's long-standing alcohol and substance abuse problems seemed to worsen with time, culminating on August 14th ,1988, when Buchanan was arrested for public intoxication. Several hours later Buchanan was found hanging in his cell, in the Fairfax County Jail, by his own shirt. His cause of death was officially recorded as suicide, a finding disputed by Buchanan's friends and family." From Wikipedia.

Yes I did get and watch the DVD. I think the jaw movement might be no more than his playing face as it did correspond to his playing. I hate to try and diagnose his affliction with so little information. Generally speaking alcoholism and depression often go hand in hand. Alcohol being a way of self medicating the depression. People who suffer from it seem to act in odd ways his very low key vocal while ringing the neck off that guitar seems terribly odd to me. I can see him not singing at all but he chooses to.

Anyway I wish it was longer.

Definitely not accusing Roy of sniffing just by that vid but I have seen that very behavior a bit too close to home. That's why I picked up on it.
You're right, though it is in time with his playing. Could be nothing more than the "guitar face" that I know NONE of us make.....

The low key singing versus the scorching guitar attack really is a bit unsettleing to me.

And, yeah man, it DEFINTELY could have a LOT longer! :x

Hell of a player.
