I agree, Nuno is great. I missed the gig here in Charlotte . Nuno also can sing pretty good. To me, he sorta crossed two great playing styles, like, the 'free form' off the cuff sorta EVH,Lynch style, along with the more melodically composed style of say, Brian May, Michael Schenker and Adrian Vandenberg. Those Randall techs keep coming up with some pretty good products dont they ?

That's cool, I'd love to see him live.
A co-worker loaned me an Extreme (debut) cassette back in early '89 I believe, really blew me away. Ended up buying the CD.
A couple tracks I really dug were "Teacher's Pet", and "Do you want to Play" which was featured in "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure" in the infamous Mall scene.
Need to pull out that CD, there were a few other cool songs on that, I recall Nuno using some over the top Flanging, and some uber high gain, like the intro to "Mother, don't want to go to School Today".
Didn't care for the sappy ballad-duet he and Cherone did later on, but the chicks sure dug it!
Talented guy no doubt.

I might be able to go tonight in NYC. If so, full report later.
Here's the new Extreme tune, Comfortably Dumb, in case you haven't heard it. If you like Extreme, which I do, it's good.

good to hear they're together & out playing. i always liked their work. they were trying to keep some melody & harmony in heavier rock guitar music. i like that tradition. nuno is proficient as hell & a good writer too. some of his solo work is interesting too. i liked schizophonic alot.

great album! , especially when you consider he did everything from writing all the songs to even playing all the instruments too.45auto wrote:i liked schizophonic alot.
the songs were nothing like extreme's music - almost alternative.
can't remember the name of the mellow tune w/ cherone singing on it.
good stuff.

I did see them last night. King's X opened and they were awesome as usual -- they played for an hour. Small place (Fillmore East/Irving Plaza) -- highlight was Doug singing Music Over My Head with the crowd, nobody in the band playing, it was like being part of gospel music, very organic. Really struck me this time how Doug has that rock star presence and the other guys, whom I like and are good, don't.
Ty played through Egnater amps, had some kind of two-humbucker Tele-shaped guitar with LP-style hardtail setup. As usual had a heavily processed signal. He mostly played chords -- not much riffing or lead work.
Extreme was great, and in saying that bear in mind I have high standards. They were tight as hell -- vocals, harmony vocals, new drummer is better than the old one to my ears, and Nuno hasn't lost a thing. In fact he might be even better. It was great to see a guitarist who is so rhythmically oriented and who has EVH-of-old-like chops. One time during a nutty run he faked yawning, just having fun. Amazing to see again how tough some of the stuff is to play -- last time I saw them was in the 90s.
They played 4-5 songs off the new CD, which I bought there. It's good. If Nuno isn't on the cover of one of the guitar mags soon, it will be a crying shame. I've read stories about Satch and Slash and Zakk being the "last of the guitar heroes." Satch does his own thing, but after seeing what I saw last night, Nuno smokes the other two easily.
Nuno played his N4 through what I guess are his signature Randall amps, very raw sound. Couldn't see FX, but his favorite was a flanger.
One more thing: Apparently Gary Cherone had a fever and was puking earlier in the day, but it didn't affect his performance.
Both bands are well worth seeing if they come your way.

Nuno is awesome. His solos were cool no doubt but I always liked him for his rythm chops. The one guy who I could just listen to even if he didn't solo because he just grooves non stop. From chunky riffs to squeels he just always comes up with cool ideas. The new tune is decent... the guitar playing is awesome of course but the chorus leaves me a bit blaaaa. Let's hope the rest of the album is better.
