Every note Joey plays fits the songs perfectly. Great under-appreciated player.

He couldn't "play" a lick...... but they're the only band that never ceased to amaze me. Interesting that they sold out Madison square garden 4 nights in a row, on the first reunion tour, when most "popular" bands were incapable of filling the seats for even one night...

I saw them not too long after they reformed. The whole band was in top form. Its one of the best Sounding shows I've seen in years. Everything was clear and crisp and brilliant. Maybe I just lucked into a good seat soundwise.
Frank is one of the finest songwriters the US has ever produced. :champ:
They had a hefty influence on a great many bands that followed them.

Right on, Zaphod! My all time fav. Saw a couple of reunion shows, each were great! None were as violent as Teenager of the Year, but each was better it's own right.. I've seen Pixies/Frank(Charles Thompson) maybe 15 times, in all. The first reunion sold out Worchester Centrum 2 nights in a row.. I was fortunate that they recorded an HD concert the night I was there, that ran for 4 months on my cable channel.... I can confirm with certainty, that it was a great show. The scream wasn't quite 1991 caliber, but it was closer than I had imagined.

'91 tune he wrote to let his gal know it was impossible to **** him hard enough.... The screamin' kills me....

Love the normal guy look-meets severely emotionally disturbed.

As guitarists, we often forget the intangibles that make it last... These guys seemlessly mixed odd time changes, imagery, Major/ minor shifts, beauty, dissonance, harmony, violence and MELODY, with a punk pop, reckless sensibility that had never been heard before. I haven't seen it since. I'd say that's unique. Most people would admit that Nirvana was a driving force in changing the music scene, early 90's. Kurt Kobain freely admitted that Smells Like Teen Spirit was "for all the world, a Pixies song." Same basic chord progression and drum beat as Debaser. Same feel as TOO many of their other tunes. David Bowie(where's that pukin' emocon?) thought they were the most significant American band in 20 years. U2(where's the freakin' emocon), went home and found out the Pixies had far surpassed their fame at home. So they took them on tour. Americans never seemed to get it though... 'til about 15 years later. Please remember what the US music scene looked like in '89....

Completely changed my musical paradigm 20+ years ago.... More than unique, for me, so please forgive any man crushes you think I may be having... :worthy:

Zaphod. Didn't you use to have a band link in your signature? Could've sworn you were running 2 stacks with 2 Echoplex's.... Maybe I'm wrong. Whoever that was, it was interesting enough to actually hold my interest from beginning to end...

There are many, many unique guitar tones, but the most famous tone is EVH...

Les Claypool (you know it's him)
Fela Kuti (pioneer afrojazz/beat)

Am I confusing "style" with "sound"? Or is it the same for this discussion?

I'm surprised not many people have said Jimi. When you hear a Hendrix song, you know its Hendrix. Who else could pull off all that crazy shit?

2. 1990s Fender Dual Showman
3.JTM45/100 Build

Personally I don't think his SOUND is all that unique. And as for SRV... :what:

To me, a lot of Jimi's uniqueness has more to do with his style than his tone. Not to say that he didnt have some REALLY spectacular tones on his better known recordings, but with some of the more obscure releases, his tone doesnt stand out quite as much as his style.
(IMO)

(Even with the acoustic version of "See My Train A Comin"... there's nothing about the tone that would lead a person to know it was Hendrix, but his style is recognizable in a second).
