Three-piece bands

Post by Did J » Mon Sep 16, 2013 2:27 pm

It's often been said that three-piece bands are the most expressive and most balanced musical units known to the rock world. Cream, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Rush, ZZ Top, Pinnick-Gales-Pridgen... These legendary acts struck upon the correct ratio of musicianship and progressive songwriting by exploring uncharted musical territories while highlighting the individual talents within their collective ranks.
So last sunday I was to The Winery Dogs in concert, great show and definitively amazing (Mike Portnoy, Ritchie Kotzen and Billy Sheehan), they were over the top...

And when you veer away from the Guitar, Bass Guitar, and Drums configuration then things seems to go awry very quickly f.e. when Jeff Beck went to Guitar, Keyboards, and Drums for the "Guitar Shop" album. I didn't care too much for Jeff's sound then but, when he went back to his tried and true Guitar, Bass, and Drums configuration things were back to normal again.

And don't forget Beck, Bogart and Appice which was in the talking satges as early as '66, at the very same time as Cream and the JH Experience but got put on hold when Beck crashed his hot rod.
