Well, he isn't a rock god, but the latest gigs from AIC that I saw, man, he's RIPPING, tone and playing wise.
Also he is a great song writer and lyricist.

I like his tone very much and he makes some KILLER hard rock riffs.... Maybe bc I lived my teenages at the 90's so I am very grunge influenced, but I think he is an underestimated musician and guitar player.

Let's hear your thoughts guys.

Fantastic player with great tone! I seen them a few years ago and it was one of the best sounding live shows I have ever heard. By a huge margin. He was using 50 watt Friedman amps at that time, finally gave up on the Bogner Fish preamps, no one would fix them any longer.
Now he is back to 100 watts, and has a signature amp coming out from Friedman.

Jerry was just about the ONLY guy in the '90's (plus Dimebag ) who still had a 'Metal Edge' to his style/sound. The rest of that Grunge scene was more of a 'Master of Reality' era Black Sabbath 'Stoner rock' sort of thing, with a little '60's 'psychodelic acid' thrown in. Cantrell had one of the best hard rock/metal tones I've ever heard on 'Dirt'. He had those very melodic 'Euro-Metal' thematic lines that is a CORE FUNDAMENTAL element that differentiates Hard Rock/Metal from say.... The Blues. I am well aware of that and really dig the tradition that he embodies with his style

Killer player, killer tone and great song writing.

I still put Facelift and Dirt as two of the greatest rock albums.

Seeing them in 3 weeks here in Melbourne, can't wait!!

I'm with George, last Rock in Rio concert he KICKED ALL other players ASSES in tone and playing, BY A HUGE margin.
I'm talking about guys like Murray, Smith, Hammet to name a few. No one came even close to his tone and stood even more far from his playing at that night...

Dirt is one of the best albuns from the 90's (paired with RATM debut album) and I really dig that chunky middy tone (was it the shiva, fish, modded 2204??) ... I dig his tone even more now with those friedman amps (he used 2 Brown Eyes named "MAD" and "PISSED" not sure about the power though).

About the grunge guys, I think Mike McCready had a nice metal edge to his sound (that he kinda lost with the passing years) and that is noticeable in tunes like even flow (droped D), Porch, Luking... even prior PJ at Temple of the dog album.... Old soundgarden was very metal-ish too.... But yes, no one comes close do Jerry at this matter.

If I recall correctly, Jerry used one of those real expensive mics (maybe wasnt so expensive then ), a particular Sennhauser ? Dirt is a orchestra of super thick and middy BROWN tone

3 amps miced and 'blended'. A Marshall,A Mesa? and a Bogner.

George was right, he used a Bogner preamp for live back then.I just think that Jerry knows how to dial in the amps that he chooses to use. He has ALWAYS gotten stellar tones, both in the studio and live.

I saw Alice in chains very close up and very very loud when they toured early with pearl jam (back when they were called mookie blaylock) I'm talking like 6 feet away. There was maybe 15 people there. Sooooooo loud we went home numb but it was intense!
