I'd have to agree with Rob on most of what he said.

Re: ROB ZOMBIE Says U.S. Rock Scene Has Never Recovered
60's 70's 80's. each was quite a distinct time period. 88-2014 has been pretty generic and treading water-like. Most bands are still tuned down low and growly in a overly macho way as if compensating for something or afraid to have an emotional side that isn't hate and anger. The great guitarists from the early periods where more well rounded and sang with their instrument rather than shouted or stabbed. But we have been at war for the better part of 40 years so it's bound to have a negative impact on music as well as just about everything else. war what is it good for, absoltley nuthin' huh!

He didn't mention oriental rugs on stage haha!
Would also add that the drive to be awesome at music and instruments in an original way, not just gymnastics, vanished at some point. Think it's cultural.

Except for "the early '90s grunge movement, which symbolized the working-class spirit and focused on music over image..."
Ummm, they didn't get the music very right either...none of them wrote anything as good as classic Stones, Zep, Who, Purple....

totally agree with coyote. something simply vanished from music and culture at large. I've contemplated this deeply for decades and my theory and explanation revolves around a change in peoples 'consciousness'. The way they view themselves in real time, or not, and how they hear music. Most don't seem to listen to sound from their cabs or from the other band members. Who knows how to jam today or improvise? I do but have a hard time finding like minded band members who are on the same plane of existence. The guys I meet are self conscious and way too worried about image and technique and not listening or trying to create something unique and classic.

Alot of the rock music today sounds like the Cookie Monster on acid, singing to a bad drum beat that sounds like someone beating on a trash can with a club. Guess I must be getting old...1988-2014 has been pretty generic and treading water-like. Most bands are still tuned down low and growly in a overly macho way as if compensating for something or afraid to have an emotional side that isn't hate and anger.
Fortunately, out of the desolation of a crap period of music is just when something fresh and original usually comes along. The conditions are ripe for such good artists to flourish. Record companies, TV and corporate radio stations have been reduced somewhat in their power due to the information age...
