I need to preface this with, I LOVE Deep Purple. One of my all time favorites. Wouldn’t mind even trying to play Blackmore in a tribute band.

So, that said…at the OC Fair last night, DP was pretty disappointing (but expected). Paice and Glover still good as ever. Gillian lost a lot of power and range (he is 70?) but still relevant. Airey as talented as he is AIN’T NO JON LORD. He did not have the Hammond thru a Marshall tone going at all. And nowhere near Lord’s stage presence. He did play some pretty stuff and the straight Hammond /Leslie tone is always glorious! The mix was light on the vocals and kinda muted. And coulda been louder for one of the Guiness book record holders for volume! Hate to say they are ready for the Vegas lounges….

That leaves Steve Morse….<sigh>… I thought this guy was an upper echelon player, well respected, talented??? I always liked the Dregs and thought they were a good band. Morse sucks!!! He sounded like a cheap Van Galen wanna be. Squeals, pinch harmonics, dive bombs, mindless bee in heat shredding. That was old shit in the 80’s. Not one note to the fit the song. He destroyed the classics like Lazy, Highway Star and Space Truckin. There are dozens of other guys that could do those songs better justice. And stop grinning like a school girl…his stage presence was soo cliché. He should spend more time learning Purple songs than buffing up his arms. Don’t worry, Ritchie, your legacy is safe…at least until I get the gig!!!

You are not out of line if ya' just belly'd up to the bar.
His accolades speak volumes as you say, no question. Consecutively winning multiple awards, and it is in his classical background what Jon Lord liked in Steve. He has humbly admitted that Jon Lord has taken him to school. Steve has a keyboard background and has worked with, and has good rapport with others on Keys.
In short the band likes him as a friend. Kinda like the guitar player in Iron Maiden's latest line-up...

Chief, Fife that guy a ticket or citizen's arrest or something.
Steve needs less dweedilly deedilly, and if anything, more whammy like Ritchie and more choice notes !
He's already proven in the speed dept. ? Besides that's why and what he has his solo spot for ???

Yeah, JJ, that's what I thought going in. I KNOW Morse is held high in high esteem but his playing that night was soooo out of left field for the music. After listening to RB and early Purple all day Morse did not play ONE note along the lines to fit those songs. He didn't have to copy RB note for note but the general feel would have been appreciated as opposed to the mindless shredding. And his tone was really, really bad. TOTAL MUD, made Claptons woman sound like a Tele bridge, really!!!

I'm a great Purple fan (in fact, y other forums my nick is Blackmore ) and to me, Deep Purple finished in 1984 with Perfect Strangers.

A friend told me once: The best Deep Purple record is "Rainbow Rising"
