Do you feel the Band of Gypsies tone is El34s or 6550s?

old thread but i'd still say neither el34 or 6550 ...
without forcing, i could get in this bog tone , very easy, but it has to be a 45/100, kt66 and pre rola G12H30 75hz.

i'm sorry i don't play very well, and it's recorded through an iphone. i'll certainly post something at another time, better.
to me, a superlead can't produce this distinctive low end... even set on shared cathode. it produces another kind. it's also too saturated for this job.

also, the 45/100 is very clean and it's also a matter of fuzz. i just use a bit of dunlop blue fuzz here but it could work with another one as well. the fuzz is set very low. and a bit of voodoo vibe.
also, my 45/100 is all new and it still needs some debug to work properly but the tendancy is there .. to my ears.

Also, no much need to play loud, here it's only one single speaker ! and it's attenuated a bit. louder it would do the job better, that's all. then, the acoustic of the room and the post recording process would have an effect into the final sound we hear.

So ! i made a machine tone demo , to show that only the 45/100 could do this tone. i used the original as a backing track, and cut the worse parts of my playing, i didn't want to disturb the original too much, this absolute masterpiece.

i'm really glad i arrived to a real useable bog tone for me, and i discovered some unexpected things, big surprises : the volume of the amp : only at 4 !!!!! yes !
the megavibe sucks compared to the voodoo vibe, for this job, with this particular amp.
the simple stock cunlop blue fuzz does the job a lot: voluyme at max ( 10 ) , fuzz between 5 and 7.

not even a speaker used in this clip ! the 45/100 is the key.
virtual speakers ( g12h30 75hz here ) , i tried with some real pre rolas , same model and it can be even better, just confirming it.
jimi rolled the volume control of the guitar often, between 8-9, and sometimes crancked. that's all. that's how he had a thick tone anyway, through this 45/100 unique filter, and how he got these cleans. or super wilde tones.
yeah, bog = kt66.

i hope that this clip will show it enough. side to side. i could improve the acoustic of this virtual altiverb room, i know, but it takes time and good ears ...

So you couldn't really approch this tone as close with your Super Lead? What are the differences? Headroom, bottom end? Or something more?/
I've read speculations that said the 45/100's were lugged to Berkeley due to the Live Album to be released from the recordings and that the valleys of neptune stuff - his latest stuff - was also 45/100's. Tonally i can hardly arguew with that. But i think he probably could have gotten very similar tones with the Super Leads too./
And, yes, a real authentic fuzz face, especially the GE variation, puts all your control onto the volume control of the guitar - from sparkly, chimey cleans to crunch and then to wild thing when turning the guitar volume to 9-10.

No, the superlead is a different territory, really. not the same sound "filter".
