The story of the Zappa guitar if I remember it correctly was that is was from a show in Florida. And he had it repaired the neck replaced and the paint left alone. It was not the pink and white flower guitar from Monterey but all white I think. I have no idea about this auction guitar. Oh yea Dewzil sold it I think I know he had it up for sale once and with drew it and later put it up again seems he didn't get all that much for it either.
Here is the article about the Zappa guitar. I was close.

hmmmm, per wikipedia....
"At this time, the Experience extensively toured the United Kingdom and parts of Europe. This allowed Hendrix to develop his stage presence, which reached a high point on March 31, 1967, when, booked to appear as one of the opening acts on the Walker Brothers farewell tour, he set his guitar on fire at the end of his first performance, as a publicity stunt. This guitar has now been identified as the "Zappa guitar" (previously thought to have been from Miami), which has been partly refurbished."
...and...
The Monterey performance included an equally lively rendition of B.B. King's 1964 R&B hit "Rock Me Baby", Tim Rose's "Hey Joe" and Bob Dylan's 1965 Pop hit "Like a Rolling Stone". The set ended with The Troggs "Wild Thing" and Hendrix repeating the act that had boosted his profile in the UK (and internationally) with him burning his guitar on stage, then smashing it to bits and tossing pieces out to the audience. This show finally brought Hendrix to the notice of the US public. A large chunk of this guitar was on display along with the other psychedelically painted Stratocaster that Hendrix smashed (but didn't burn) at his farewell concert in England before he left for the US and Monterey, at the Experience Music Project in Seattle

Yea there were a number of accounts that said that the Astoria guitar was restored and burnt again at Miami but that sounds like BS to me. If it is true this guitar in england has been hanging in the guys garage all these years then obviously the Zappa guitar is a third guitar.

and from another site...
"...a few were destroyed during his notorious guitar-burning finales. One formerly sunburst Strat which was mutilated by Hendrix at the 1968 Miami Pop Festival was given to Frank Zappa by a Hendrix roadie. Zappa had it hanging on a wall in his basement for years. He posed for the cover of Guitar Player Magazine holding this instrument, and recent news and an image of the refurbished instrument are available in the August 2006 issue of Guitar Player."
So unless this new auction can verify the provenance beyond a doubt it's bullshit.

He never burnt a guitar at Miami. The Monterey Strat is accounted for.
After it was noted Jimi never burnt a Strat at Miami, it was thought Zappa had the Astroria guitar, which he didn't.
The Zappa story was bogus, IMO all along. I smelled BS from the start with that Strat.

I checked out the Yahoo! news story on this. It's funny, they have a picture of Hendrix performing at what they call the "Gillmore East." I wonder if there's a Gillmore West, North, or South. Must be!

I can understand typos but to not catch that I think you'd have to be ignorant of the last forty years in music or totally blind. In which case I suspect you'd probably work in a braille media outlet.
I had to screenshot it. I thought they might catch it and fix it. D'oh!

No, probably oblivious, ignorant morons <sigh>. I see that a lot in the local paper here, the Orange County Rag, errr Register. Caught one during the hockey playoffs, something like Penguins win, lead series 4-2 game 7 tonight or some REALLY STUPID shit like that

Here's what Zappa said about this guitar:
'Another on of my Strats is the one Hendrix burned at the Miami Pop Festival; It was given to me by this guy who used to be his roadie. I had it hanging on the wall in my basement for years, until, last year, when I gave it to Rex and said, "Put this sucker back together," because it was all tore up. The neck was cracked off, the body was all fired, and the pickups were blistered and bubbled. That's the one that's got the Barcus-Berry in the neck. A lot of people thought I had Hendrix's guitar from Monterey, but it was from Miami; the one at Monterey was white and this one is sunburst.'
from the Guitar Player Interview in '77.

I can't imagine that it's a complete fake - a lie in consequence - but also Zappa is not talking very accurate about that guitar. So maybe he got the body from somewhere with the story behind it or he 'composed' a little story of it's own. Who knows... Anyway - I wouldn't doubt that at least the body was from one of the guitars that Hendrix burnt - or that at least Zappa thought that.
There's another rumour going on that the body might come from a strat Jimi burned in Bridgeport, Kennedy Stadium, in August '68 - but then again: who knows...

Sounds like a Dickenson story to me, "Yes mate, I have Jimi's burned guitar from the Astoria Theater in me garage and found it the other day, whilst looking for bits for my Morris Minor."
Yes righty ho mate!! Any way we will see, suprised Janie hasn't claimed it for the estate yet.

Already I have a problem with this so called Astoria guitar. I just looked at a Jimi Hendrix book by a Sharon Lawerence, when I was just in Maryland. There were two pictures of the Astoria guitar, front and back of the body. It was painted a light color, B&W photo, and had writing on it, parts of Jimi's song lyrics and a poem.
It was not a sunburst and looked nothing like this at all, it was missing the electronics and had split into two pieces lengthwise.
This is totally bogus, I must say!
I can't find a photo on Google image search, but it isn't this guitar pictured in this thread.
