Fender Twin

Post by Ydna » Wed Jun 09, 2010 11:27 pm

I've heard people say Jimi used a fender twin before going to England, and that he occasionally used one while recording, does anyone know what recordings he used it on?

Oh, and read the description for the fender twin on the fender website, it alludes to Jimi using Fender Twins.

I think he used it with Curtis Knight and little Richard. I have an old album of stuff and it sounded like a Fender twin. A maestro fuzz sound was on some of it sounds like. Very speculative on alot of that early stuff that was released posthumously, with some of it not being Hendrix at all, and others being real hard to tell, since Hendrix really IMPROVED from early '65 to mid '66. Those British albums (yardbirds, Bluesbreakers, etc) must have really inspired him.

Some of the Are You Experienced album sounds like a fender amp to me but ive been told that a 45/100 will sound like one.

Hendrix used a twin (or was it a 4/10 Bassman ) alot on 'Electric Ladyland' . The stuff that sounds 'unlike' a Marshall, probably are, like the intro to 'Rainy Day' with the sax trade off, and 'Long Hot Summer Night'. I think probably upwards of half that album is possibly a Fender amp. Gotta love the Fender reverb, 'cause it's so interesting to hear/play.

Unfortunately Eddie Kramer has often described the amp as a "little Blond showman"
& since showman amps are not ususally little muddles things more than it helps

IMHO the amp we hear is probably a blond Bandmaster with the three tube vibrato feature
which sounds a lot like a univibe & I suspect Hendrix dug the amp for that reason

Check out any of the Blond amps with the three tube Vibrato & you will see why

i want this one ! ; )
i'd like to know more about this amp.
three tubes ? is there a vibrato on every bandmaster ? is it a 100 watts ?
i heard that jimi had a bandmaster, but i didn't know about this kind of vibrato that would explain some electric ladyland tones, or even some castle made of sand tone. it could be that kind of structure in the sound.

thanks a lot parkhead

Eddie Kramer only once in his three books describes a showman. No other amps are mentioned except marshalls and how loud Jimi recorded. I dont think he used twins. It is never mentioned. From those books it sounds like it was 99.9% marshalls for all the recordings

I've read in a few different guitar Magazines (as well as the 'Experience Hendrix' mags) with Eddie Kramer, and one thing is for sure, I dont think he is quite as up to par with his amp knowledge as he is his board/console knowledge. I've heard him say bassman, twin, showman.

He has said MANY times that Hendrix used a bassman on the studio version of Voodoo Chille. I hear a fender amp ALL OVER Electric Ladyland. Essentially I hear the cleans as being a Fender, and the dirt as a Marshall.

If I'm not mistaken, this is the actual birth of that whole Marshall = dirty, Fender = clean theory that producers adhered to for the '70's - '80's, all the way up to this current 'modeling' crap.

I do agree that Marshall amps were used more, it's just some of that stuff (especially on 'Electric Ladyland') sounded like a Fender, though maybe not a twin neccisarily.

All the bandmasters i can see have only two power tubes, do you have any infos ?
i like the bandmaster of the clip you've shared, but i don't know why you think it has three tubes.

I should have been clearer about the three Tubes

Some blond amps use three 12ax7's for vibrato
(5 sections)

the later amps use 1 12ax7 and an optocoupler to create vibrato

the ones using the three 12ax7's have a univibe type sound to the vibrato that is incredibly rich
and creamy

the twin version

mmmh ! Nice !

thank you !
you've found some nice examples of what i'd like.

6gxxx schematics ? at Weber ? ok not 5XXXX ? i don't know when this particular vibrato you're describing wa introduced, and when it was replaced by an optocoupler system.
but i'm not sure that they may have this vibrato at weber.
the best would be the real vintage one. if i find a nice one for cheap, after i'd have settle my choice on some few models i'd like, i'll go for it.

Voodoo child sounds more like a 67 superlead than a fender to me

Don't forget there are two Voodoo Chile cuts

Voodoo Chile:
(the organ Jam)

and Voodoo Chile (slight Return)
Slight Return is a Marshall mic'ed from about 8 different points
with an absolutly killer mix of all of those tracks
to give the guitar its incredible surround sound motion

for the Organ Trio & R&B stuff no doubt Hendrix was using Fender type amps

it was introduced with the larger Blond/brown Tolex 61-63 amps and replaced by the ab763 Reverb circuitry
since reverb was THE BIG selling feature and they needed the chassis space for that

IMHO if fuzz is being used its not a reverb amp ... since Fuzz and a twin with reverb tend to sound more like
the bad california bands than the rich bombastic Hendrix tone
