A good hendrix amp for under $1000?
Preferably a combo as I don't have a cab. I'm looking for an amp between $500 - $1000. Ideally, I would love to have a 69' spec Metro Superlead but I really don't have the cash at this point. What I need now is something that I can gig with, so not a half stack, that will still be close to the superlead tone. I love jimi's later sound (woodstock, berkeley, winterland, la forum, etc), so keep that in mind with your recommendations.

I would recommend checking out the CARVIN site.
They (Carvin) make some REAL good gear. Thier prices have always been reasonable too.

any amp of theirs you recommend in particular?
I was checking out their vintage series, but noticed they all run EL84s. I currently use a 70s Traynor Bassmate which runs EL84s, so I wonder how much of a difference in sound there'll be, and how close to the later live hendrix sound that I can get.

I just repaired an old 6L6 Carvin.. Not my taste, but maybe the new stuff is better.
I lean a little more towards Stef's thinking..... Prices seem to vary widely for 2203/2204.
Here's a guy in England looking for 550 pounds(less than 1K) for a 2204 combo(as of july 1) Shipping might kill you, but....

IMO the Marshall JCM 800-4010 1x12 G12-65 Combo is the coolest little amp that gives you ALL Marshall in a tight little package.
I only recommend the 1x12 version with the vertical/stacked input knobs on the left with a Celestion '65. (Not the 2x12)
For the $1000 range you will be very pleased with this combo.

Thanks for the correction. I was just thrilled to see something with the proper circuitry going so cheap.

What do you guys think of a 59' Tweed Bassman Reissue as a hendrixy amp? Used, I might be able to find one for $1000

There's a reason why so many rebuilt the guts, and trannies of all those reissues. Maybe we're just obsessed, but chasing that extra 10% is why we're all here. I must admit, that the kid playing through the 2203 reissue in the previous youtube post, had IT---BIG time.. Doesn't matter what he's playing through, he'll find IT. For the rest of us? That extra 10% gets us there.theactor19 wrote:What do you guys think of a 59' Tweed Bassman Reissue as a hendrixy amp? Used, I might be able to find one for $1000
The Traynor George(hope all is well

Guess the real question, is what type of player are you? If yer under 30, you may find the Bassman/Plexi volume restrictions limiting. 2203/2204 is a great choice when you need some more gain, but that's going to be freakin' loud, too. If you've got IT, you'll pull it from all three.
JimiJames has more experience in the combo - I'll defer to him. I get stuck in the circuitry. Speakers are the Exclamation point that pull ud in before, snd sftr

I know it's not a combo, but Ceriatone makes some KILLER amps. Point-to-point turret construction, Sozo or Mallory caps, carbon comp resistors. It's killer bang for the buck.
Just curious, fuzz was a big part of Jimi's sound. Do y'all guys run the amps clean and get a germanium fuzz?

Hey George.. good to hear from you. I have an early 70s Traynor Bassmate (EL84s), and its not doing it for me. I think a bassmaster would be better, but they only make them in heads. Also I've tried one and it wasnt quite right.VelvetGeorge wrote:How about an old Traynor?

Any combo you would recommend under $1000 that would be close in tone to the 69 spec superlead you recently built for brandon?
I'm wondering about the Fender Bassman 59' Tweed Reissue because one has come up in my area for about 5 or 6 hundred dollars.

Re: A good hendrix amp for under $1000?
It's odd to me, but I really dont think of Hendrix much in the realm of 'MARSHALL' user. I mean, I know he used Marshalls, but he sounded WAY different than ALL the other Marshall users of his day. I know that his guitar of choice had alot to do with it (strat),, but to me, Hendrix sounded his best on the 'Electric Ladyland' album, where he was mainly using a Fender.
Having said that, for the live stuff, like Woodstock, La Forum, etc, ONLY a Marshall gets there(with a strat and proper technique). I just wish that some of the previous mentioned ALBUM tones could have been properly administered live by Hendrix.
Try a Carvin x100b combo (if they still make that model ?)

+1 agree...I see YBA-1's going for <$600 pretty often on ebay. Seems at least 2-3 a month go for cheap. I've seen a few even go for under $400 a couple months back.VelvetGeorge wrote:How about an old Traynor?

Re: A good hendrix amp for under $1000?
Alright so the Bassman ended up falling through.. too bad.
So i'm really thinking about the JCM 800 4010 combo 1X12, but I'm having a tough time finding one.. what do they usually go for?
I would replace my traynor bassmate with a traynor bassmaster, but they only come in heads, and I don't have a cab. So looking for more of a combo i can gig with and out to more speakers if needed.
