Which mic did Jimi use in the studio?
Anyone know what microphone was used to record Jimi's electric guitar?
I'm planning to record an EP and I want a vintage sound to come out of it.. not just Jimi, but all those guys from that time like the doors, beatles, jefferson airplane, floyd, etc.

i think you should read an interview of the one who recorded ACDC in the Studio, it was very interesting. quite simple.
myself i love my pair of ribbon mics , SE R1. really Worth it, cheap, top quality like some vintage legendary mics, and i think totaly what you're after. very easy to get a great sound in a minute.
and also interviews of eddie kramer ( who was rejected by acdc by the way , lol )

For guitar it was often a Neumann U67 or Beyer M160.

I have just bitten bullet acquired a new SM57 (Christmas pressie) and M-Audio Fast track interface so that I can record in stereo with it and A.N. Other Mic when I get the hang of it! Started with garageband that came with my Mac but advice re: future upgrades gratefully received!

I know, ouch on U67! And most have been modified over the years.
You can't beat the M160 in it's price range. But the Chinese ribbon mics are worth looking at too. The Cascade Fathead sounds cool, not unlike my Royer, for a fraction of the cost. Gutpile has a pair of those that we used in the living room when we did Unchained and Have a Drink On Me years ago.

Skip the U67 (unless you're Donald Trump).
A couple years ago George finally convinced me I was daft not to have an M160.
As usual, he was right.
In the world of ribbons, I've got a 44BX, a 4038, an R121 and... 10 times out of 10 the M160 just sounds freaking fantastic on electric guitars. That little bugger doesn't even seem to care where you place it or need EQ afterwards. Just get it in the ballpark of the speaker and it sounds rock 'n roll. You'll swear the thing was designed hand-in-hand with Marshall.
Great on ALL kinds of other sources as well -- very popular on drum overheads. Got a fabulous sound out of a glockenspiel just last week. Shoot, that should be in their promo material: From Xylophones to Plexis and anything else you might throw at it.
Pretty durable for a ribbon mic, too.

You give me far too much credit. But thank you.
I've heard the M160 described as "just open the door and throw it in the room, then hit record". Lol. Maybe not quite that easy, but pretty close. Surprising for a hypercardiod ribbon mic. Whatever, great guitar tones. Love it for drum overheads too, as mentioned.

Re: Which mic did Jimi use in the studio?
This thread got me inspired. I pulled up those old multitrack files and bashed them into something sounding like music. No vocals or lead guitar, sorry.
Despite much processing, you will hear some mics mentioned here on this track. Specifically:
drum overheads are M-160's
guitar left is Gutpile playing through my 45/100 replica. Cab mic'ed with Beta 57 and Cascade Fathead.
guitar right is me through a 45 in BB combo with Golds. Mics are Sennheiser 409 and AEA R-92 ribbon mic.
Bass was a DI and a Shure 52 on SVT 8-10 cab. Blended about 50/50.
Kick and snare had samples blended in. Lots of UAD plugins and an IR of the Bricasti M7 (amazing reverb unit) adding depth and roominess.
Fun stuff, I wish we had time and a good room to do more of this.

Cool clip George!
How does the M-160 do with vocals?

Re: Which mic did Jimi use in the studio?
Good question, I've never tried it on vocals. I usually opt for a condenser on vocals, or Shure SM7.
